Hopefully not time and time again as after the first time you will have worked out that applying plenty of grease under the rubber boot means you'll never have to do it again.

I've almost finished doing this, been taking pictures as I go so will do a bit of a how-to, that Tony can then rip the piss out of.

Been having to do it in 30 minute bursts due to home commitments this week. The only fiddly bit was getting the contact blocks seated back against the springs while getting the main central core thingy back in.

I may be wrong but I think the main central core thingy majig is called an armature if I remember right.

If it' works, you'll have done a good job.
And yes- those brushes are a bit fiddly; I prop them against the casing and spring them into place after the armature (yes!) is in position.

I don't believe it it, my memory is working. I remember the days when I used to change the worn brushes in car starters when they where faulty.

I wedged them out individually by jamming a small screwdriver between the back of the spring and the housing, then when all four were in place I used a 21mm socket to keep them there and slid the core/armature in.

Well I finished this little job today and it's only gone and worked hasn't it!!

Thanks for all the tips on here. The internals seemed beyond repair as the plastic insulating sleeve and the contact bar thingy were both mullered, needing extensive superglueing and persuading respectively.

I'll do a how to thread when I get a minute.

Hi all...just wanted to say a great thanks to all who contributed to this post. I too had the corroded bolt, nothing left of the nut and very poor starting problems. Previously changed to the 18 amp battery with an improvement but not 100%.

Today, after reading the post, took the starting motor apart, replaced the bolt, cleaned up the armature and all the wee bits, inspected the brushes which were ok and re-assembled.

Bleeding thing is now on STEROIDS. Starts by telepathy me thinks.
