Winter strip down

Thats it iv finaly got round to stripping her down for the winter. Im going to re-spray all the tatty paint work and smarten up the forks.All in the comfort of my nice warm man cave





wish me luck! oh and by the way which is the best way to prep the fork lowers for painting? emery and elbow grease or some thing like a flap wheel in a drill?

Try paintstripper to remove the old lacquer with a wire brush and a good wash after.

Cheers Wicky, i tried Nitro-morse on the front sub frame last night. Left it over night and it aint touched it! Iv just got a mess to clean up Gunna try a wire wheel and me drill next! that should shift it

That will do it, but will leave the surface a bit rough. So give it a good rub down with wet n dry afterwards (180 or 240 grade) so you have a nice smooth surface for paint. Are you going to prime them first. If so wet n dry the primer down once dry (600 grade should do for this) nice and smooth as well before applying your top coat.

The better he prep the better the finish.

The Etch-primer sounds great but it has to be mixed and sprayed and i aint got any spray kit. looks like ill have to go the poor mans rout and use rattle cans thanks for the tip though

Only the two part has to be mixed - see the halfords link for the simple rattle can version

halfrauds do an etch primer called acid 8, its in a red can, i think it costs about a tenner....
i used brake caliper paint on my front subframe, i didn't use an etch primer tho, and it turned out fine...

Looking good Darren. Funny enough I have been spraying etch primer today. Rattle can via ebay, Or as wicky said Halfords should have it too. Etch primer for bare ally, spot on If your going to be using Hammerite they would suggest using their primer straight on top of bare metal, but etch primer it first as it's the perfect base coat for bare metals and can have anyhing coated on top.
