A local chap to me has a manual tyre changing jig. From what I can remember the wheel goes over a bit vertical bar and then he has a long pole with a thing on the end to get the bead on or off. Just seems to walk around the pole and the bead pops off or on. Great bit of kit

I'm all for DIY tyre changing, but what do you do about balancing the wheel?

I made one like this( mine looks a bit more Heath Robinson)

Image

I made it out of some scrap box section and ordered some skateboard wheel bearings.

I have a spare rear and front wheel spindle. You fit your tyre and place it on the balancer. The heaviest part of the wheel rotates to the bottom (six o'clock) and you fit the stick on weights at 12 o'clock.

rotate the wheel and make sure it doesn't settle on any particular part of the wheel (if that makes sense).

That sounds good.

I had my car tyres fitted by a guy once and he had a manual balancer which was basically a spike he put the wheel on and he added weights until it stayed perfectly level. I was a bit worried a the time but they ended up balanced as well as any machine had ever done them. No vibration at all 8O
