Not starting

Post by Ddave »

Hi lads
Well i went to start the bike this morning and its died. It turned over once when i hit the starter but then it just died, no power at all. If i turn the ignition on i get absolutley nothing.
Battery had plenty of charge.

Any ideas?

Thanks
Dave

Forgot to mention it also "clicked" when it died, just as the starter stoped turning.

Well just tried again, when i turned the ignition on the dash lit up, hit the starter and "click" its gone again. Loose connection somewhere mabie? Still not sure what the clicking is though.

it sounds like a corroded connection on the starter...there's a rubber cover on the front of the starter motor, pull it off and have a look..if your lucky it'll just want cleaning up,if it's badly corroded it's a remove and replace the bolt job...someone will be along soon to post the link for how to do this.

it could also be a sh*!@ed battery too...check the batteries got plenty of charge in it too

good luck m8

Flat battery mate the clicking is the starter not having enough googa mumba to turn...have you been doing short journeys?

Also have you the original rec/regulator on? Maybe have burned the battery out, check fuses and main 30a fuse under seat on left side. Check the voltage from the rec/reg to check this when running, should read about 14.5v

The fact that you have a new one makes me ask why did you need one? I'd have a small wager your rectifier/reg is breaking down and killing your battery.

Only changed the battery because the cold was killing the old one, was told uprating the battery was a common mod on these bikes? Great thanks lads ill clean the starter connection and give the batt a quick charge and see what happens. Will let you know.

Thanks again!

Edit: been thinking, surely if it was a dead battery/corroded connection then my dash would still light up, lights work etc when ignition is on? Im getting nothing at all..
Checked all fuses, all ok.

Is your storm an early or later version. If early version and your R/R looks like this replace pronto with a later finned version. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/HONDA-CBR-125 ... 5aed371013

Image

Clicking - is the sound of your stater relay getting activated by the stater button but there's not enough juice getting through to power the starter motor. So either battery is low or there's impedance in the starter connection generally caused by corrosion as mentioned earlier, esp around the starter bolt connection as this if not regularly greased under the rubber hood can rapidly disintegrate along with corrosion getting into the stater motor from all the salty crap thrown at it at this time year

Also check the connections are clean & tight on the battery terminals. Slap some vaseline on to protect it from the elements

Check fuses just above the battery, and that all your earth connections are clean and tight.

Its the older model, 98 or 99 cant remember now, ill look into geting that replaced asap.
Fuses are all ok, battery is clean and tight.
Im hoping its just a dead battery as surely if it was a corroded starter the dash etc would still light up? Something tells me its not that simple, but fingers crossed.
Thanks

98/99 is an early model with the unfinned failure prone R/R fitted as standard. When it goes it can kill the battery and other electronics,

If the dash lights aren't working yet your getting a click from the relay - that shows that you have barely any juice in your battery. Check the voltage and try charging it up with an external charger. If the R/R has failed then it won't charge the battery from a running engine.
