front brake upgrade

Post by mactat2 »

Hi Guys, doing a winter refresh of the bike, repaint, new head race bearings and a few other bits lol managed to get hold of a set of gsxr 1000 k1 front calipers, can anyone recommend a master cylinder that works well with them that give progressive feel and will allow use of my after market vtr brake lever?
cheers

did you get the 4 pot or the 6 pot callipers ?
you will need the matching master cylinder a 19mm should be used with the 6S
and a 16mm for the 4S

Hi Lloydie, they're 6 piston calipers so i should use a 19mm? any suggestions as to which would be best so i can use my shortie levers from the vtr? i read somewhere (possibly the super hawk forum) that the matching k1 gsxr mc wasnt very good as i didnt give much power or feeling. But having never ridden one ive no idea wether this is correct or the person who had that experience had riden one with sticking calipers?

You will need to service the 6 pots often as they seize and always give a wooden feel at the lever !
Most gixxer riders swap them for the 4 pots as they are better .
Tbh you'd be better off selling them and getting the cbr600f4i callipers and master cylinder as these give great braking and great feel check out amcq46 thread on them

yeah they bolt straight on, 62mm centres on the gsxr 1000 k1 just need to find a master cylinder to go with them now. was hoping to find one that i can use my vtr shortie levers on. But if not i'll just have to do a mix n match on the levers

That's what performance bikes said about the 6pots in the article I was quoting in my brake upgrade thread in the workshop section.

Have a look here. http://www.vtr1000.org/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=15494

From what I have heard they are OK as long as they are regularly serviced, but are more about looks than performance
