starting issue
starting issue
Hi guys, I have a bit of a problem but it is very intermittent, but I will explain what is happening. I will go to the bike whether that be in the morning or after work and the bike starts ok, sometimes it struggles but it will always start but if I stop and turn off the bike and then 2 minutes later go and try and start it up again it will try and turn over but it is very laboured and usually ends up killing the battery like it did last night, started fine at work rode home pulled up outside the house and turned the bike off came inside to pick up my cash card went back to the bike and due to it being 10:50pm I free wheeled the bike to the bottom of the hill and tried to start the bike and nothing and ended up pushing the fooking thing back up the fooking hill, and the bike is still dead this morning, its only 3 miles to work but distance does not affect this issue I have done 40 miles and it happen and it does not happen all the time so it really catches me out like it did last night, if I have not explained something properly or you just want some more info let me know, oh I am going to get a new battery tomorrow
Cheers guys

Re: starting issue
Sounds like your rectifier is busted.
It boils the battery and when the battery is hot, it doesn't give you enough juice to start the engine (short breaks between rides). Your battery is not yet completely busted so when the battery has cooled down (after work, morning) the bike start "almost normally".
Take a look into workshop section more about the rectifier

Re: starting issue
CBR125 rectifier/regulator works great (finned and keeps cool) and is a straight forward swap over.
The R/R is behind the seat cowl fairing on the right hand side as you sit on the bike (up from the pillion footpeg area). Just unplug old one, unscrew it and swap for new one.

Re: starting issue
Check your rectifier out first but it could just be an old battery though.
I had a seven year old battery on my Firestorm which gave the same symtoms. short journey and no restart until the battery had cooled down.
A new battey put me right. The SP is just starting the give the same symptoms after about six years. A couple of desufates on the Optimate and it's made it a lot better but it's still a bit weak and will need replacing soon.

Re: starting issue
It's worth sticking the battery on an optimate as your only doing short journeys, over time the battery will drain a bit as it's not getting the chance to recharge back up fully. But if you have an original R/R like the first image in wicky's post then change anyway as it's only a matter of time until that fails.
Once the battery is charged and back on the bike, start it up and check to see if you R/R is working properly with a multimeter. It should be around 13v to 14v with the engine running and lights on. If it under 13 volts then the R/R is not charging the battery properly. If it goes into the 15's then the R/R is overcharging and has fried the battery it.

Re: starting issue
a tip to help recover an old battery is as follows:
1) remove from bike as a desulfate charge on some chargers wont start with the other electrical loads from the bike still attached
2) drop the battery from 6" onto a concrete floor to dislodge as much contamination from the plates
3) charge with an optimate or similar high spec charger [the ones Aldi sells for £25 are good]

Your just as well to change the rectifier especially if it is the old type as when it fails it will take out your nice new batteryPete.L wrote:Check your rectifier out first but it could just be an old battery though.

Re: starting issue
The r/r has been changed already by one of the previous 17 owners as I had a look today at work had to get it jumped before work and after today there is just nothing coming from the battery it just struggles to even turn over now so I think it might be a new battery time. the r/r is the finned type I did look at the make but can I remember it no but it has definitely been changed.
Thanks guys

Two bikes, still only four cylinders!

Re: starting issue
Check your battery connections are clean and tight. Also all the earth connections are free of corrosion.
Another thing to check is the starter motor esp. where the lead connects to the bolt underneath the rubber hood as corrosion from salty winter riding can eat the bolt. Make sure it's regularly greased up.

Finned ones can still fail !
Replace battery with a nice shiny but quite expensive Motoblat one, then check the charging rate from the R/R & replace if ness & also follow Wickys suggestions re connections & the starter lead.
