Hi guys,
I've recently bought a 98fw with non specifc after market pipes fitted. i have an issue with the engine bogging down at 7000rpm. i initially thought this could be caused by incorrect fueling for the non standard pipes. to confirm or eliminiate this theory i purchased a set of standard pipes from ebay and attempted to fit them this afternoon. however i have alignment issues on both exhausts. i have checked the part numbers for the year and they are 18300-MBB-003 and 18400-MBB-003 for left and right respectivly however the exhausts are stamped HM MBB E1. i can find no reference to this part number on the net.
my question is, were these pipes a standard part for all years meaning that i have been sold pipes from a different bike or have i got the wrong spec for the year?
Any help would be most appreciated cheers
Nick
What doesn't kill you, can only make you stronger...
Is it just bogging down at 7 thou or really struggling to get past that. It could a coincidence but if the timing was out by 180 degrees then it wont go past 7 though. Have you had the CCT's done recently. As for the cans, standard cans should be the same throughout the years. The part numbers could be different if manufactures got changed. How was the bike running before putting the new ones on.
I had a nightmare with alignment issues when I had mine.
Even when I took off a set of Scorpions to do some work, then refit the same pipes, they just wouldn't fit.
In the end I had to fit the front and rear down pipes first, very loosely. Connect them together, again leaving the connection very loose.
Then I had to connect the end cans and hang them from the rear foot rests but leave the connections to the pipes very loose.
Once all that is in place, sit on the bike and make sure everything moves freely before tightening everything up. Start at front cylinder head, then rear cylinder. It's a little tricky as you have to push the two pieces together whilst tightening the link between the front and rear pipe.
When I changed exhausts a bit later on for a different set, they wouldn't fit without taking the whole system off and re-doing the whole thing, starting with it all loose and then tightening from front to back. The link between the rear downpipe and front downpipe sections can vary with how far on the sleeve it sits, and this will drastically effect the angle of the cans and how they fit. That's why I ended up having to fit the cans to the rear pegs first whilst it was all loose.

As for this, I wouldn't have thought exhausts are causing your problem anyway.
First thing is CCTs, but then I suppose it depends on what sort of 'bogging down' you're talking about. I had a hesitation on mine at about 6k RPM and that was bad fuel from Tesco, but I only found out after I checked literally everything else. What a waste of time.
I changed my cans recently .. the left one fitted perfect .. the right link lug mount was
well out .. by as much a 1 inch .. apparantly its a common problem I suppose same as owt
else you only get what you pay for ... I recently saw link pipes on flea bay for
nearly hundred squid... mmm. I used a large washer plate to support the pipe its
well solid now
