smelling of fuel
Last couple of weeks my storm been parked up in the garage and i went to it the other day with a very strong smell of fuel!
For the life of me i can't find where it is coming from. I've got a after market fuel cap (no smell from that) I am thinking my be the one of the slides are stuck open?

Re: smelling of fuel
It could be the petcock diaphragm, it also may effect the way teh bike runs, seen that before on couple VTR's, very easy fix though, here is a link from another fellow I know:

Don't go to the heavy duty work right away, start with the easy troubleshooting first, you may save yourself lots of time, if it's not the petcock check your vent hoses vacuum lines

Re: smelling of fuel
So you are describing a smell but no leaks visible correct. If a carbs is at fault and fuel is passing the float chamber it will migrate down the bore into the sump. Dropping the oil will verify this for any contamination. If there is contamination I would look at getting it sorted sooner than later as fuel in the oil will lead to an unhappy engine. Personally if it were the case I would be removing the tank & carbs, stripping & cleaning them. When its all back together I would advise occasionally adding a fuel stabilizer to ensure varnishing does not occur again especially if the bike is being standing for a longer period of time.
Re: smelling of fuel
I cant see how fuel could get from the float chamber into the sump via the combustion chamber without the vacuum of the engine running to suck it up hill through jets into the carb throat and into the inlets. It's more than likely just the fumes travelling out the tank breather pipe. If the petcock has failed so there is a constant free flow of fuel into the float chamber, without the bike running and it just sitting there at most it may possibly get to the point where it would over flow out the overflow outlets. The two rubber hoses that run through the holes on the outside of the carbs. Open the fuel cap and see if it releases any pressure. Close the cap and see if the smell continues.

Re: smelling of fuel
Right side of the fuel tap there is little bit coming out the tank, should there be a hose there? Don't think it's the over flow thing?

Get a diaphragm rebuild kit for the fuel tap.
