WD40
I have seen loads of posts about it, some say it's miracle stuff for cleaning and protecting, and some say it will rust up your bike in no time.
I sometimes spray it on my bike's rear shock and exposed bolts after cleaning it to try and protect them and stop them rusting.
What's the definitive verdict? Am I just making the bike rust or actually doing any good?
Alternatively, has anyone used that ACF 50 stuff and if so, where do you spray it and does it work?

Have you a source/ link that WD40 is rust causing?some say it will rust up your bike in no time.
The worst I've I've heard is that the solvent in WD40 can damage plastics & certain rubber but yet to see any evidence.
Use it in winter to keep the winter salted roads at bay. Spray it on everything down below bar the seat, brakes and haemorrhoids.Alternatively, has anyone used that ACF 50 stuff and if so, where do you spray it and does it work?
It may be that your whole purpose in life is simply to serve as a warning to others.

No, no source, just word of mouth you know, the odd comments.
I try not to spray it on plastics really anyway, just on the metal parts I don't want to get corroded.
And do you find that ACF 50 works then? Do you use the bike in winter and suffer no corrosion to exhaust and underside of bike?

Re: WD40
It doesn't cause rust.
You can clean plastics with it, it takes tar off, it repels water, it penetrates.
In short, it's bloody marvellous stuff and I've used it for loads of stuff over many years.

Two bikes, still only four cylinders!

Re: WD40
Never heard of it causing rust and I don't believe is does either, yes it can be bad for some plastics/rubber as in oil seals and things if used on a constant basis but I can't say I ever had any problems with it. One thing I will say about it, is that people think it's a miracle cure for electrics as it repels water. A little can help but too much is not good as it's liquid and liquid is a conductor. Vaseline is better for electrics. WD40 polishes up my cans nice
and I use it on the frame. I would not use it on areas that are supposed to be greased as it's likely to break the grease down. I mainly use it for stubborn nuts and bolts and lubing cables rather than a protectant.
I've not used ACF-50 but it gets amazing reviews all over and is used by the military. I think it's more of a spray all over once to protect the bike through winter then wash off in Summer kind of thing.

ACF-50 really is fantastic stuff, it's expensive ( about £16 a can around here ) but imo it's worth every penny. I covered my old zx6r in it a couple of years back just before winter set in, rode all through winter and never cleaned the bike once. Cleaned it in Spring and afterwards it looked just like it did before Winter. Used it ever since, everything gets it bar the tyres, discs, seat and pegs.
Do like to use WD40 on the wheels, brings them up a treat.

WD-40 was first developed to keep moisture off the nose cones of missiles by the US military to stop ice forming, WD = water dispersant, 40 = the 40th version they tried. Have a look at the can there will be a little rocket on there.
It does contain a solvent & is brilliant for removing glue & sticky stuff.
The GT85 type stuff was developed through the same channels but for use on aircraft on aircraft carriers to protect against the salty water, same idea in principle but it's stickier so it lasts longer.
With WD you can get it in bulk non aerosol bottles, which you then use in a hand held pump up sprayer, works out cheaper & has no propellent gasses.

Re: WD40
I often use WD or GT85 to protect bits on the bike,
And Ive also heard the "it rusts your bike" stuff, even on here somewhere in my cleaning thread the other week
Not used acf50 myself but always heard people rave about it

Re: WD40
WD40 is superb at degreasing and protecting i've used it for years on all of my bikes and never had a problem it`s great for spraying on a rag and wiping lube off rear wheel before washing just don`t get it near your disc and your chain or it will start to break down your chain lube also keep it away from bearings for the same reason i always spray it over my engine and header pipes after washing it will smoke when you next start up but it quickly burns off and it makes your engine look like new i tend to get the cheap versions from pound shops as to be honest it`s just as good and a fraction of the cost i also regularly spray around moving parts of foot pegs etc and inside switchgear and ignition barrel so spray away to your hearts content bud it`s cracking stuff
