Check the intake system and exhaust for air leaks, Service the bike after winter with a new filter like you're doing - new plugs as well?

Very recent Chain and Sprocket How-to thread in The Workshop Knowledgebase: http://www.vtr1000.org/phpBB3/viewtopic ... 31&t=16500

Has it been jetted and tuned with the 'hi-flow' filter? as they are not a plug'n'play performance mod.

What make is the filter as some i.e. K&N are washable and reoilable unlike the standard paper kind.

Could be a misfire on one of the cylinders, check plug gaps, cap on the plug fitted correctly or coil going down.

I have heard BSM on a dyno with one pot down and they still run fine, but with a backfire.

Looks like a pattern filter similar to OEM so you should be okay.

Check the vacuum on the petcock is in the right place. It should be on the side and to the rear of the left fuel hose not on the bottom.

Yes you will need a splitter to do the chain. Some people use a grinder if it is rivited.
