flat battery help

right heres the problem i know you guys can help , since i have had the bike no problem still on standard cct BUT i have been doing short trips as late. had a run out ran fine then next morning wouldnt start. charged the battrey started no problem left over night wouldnt start now heres the thing no electrical guy more mechanics but took the battrey off put a circuit tester over the positive and negative cables on the bike just to tast continuity and i would assume with ignition off there would be no circuit with ignition on there would be , with ignition off or on i still get a circuit so i assume thats whats draining the battery, any instruction thought would be appreciated

There's your problem, then.
Unplug all of the connectors behind the rear tank bolt, and also unplug the reg/re c and indicator relay.

Check again with the meter, which hopefully will now show no current draw.

If so, plug things back in one at a time and when you plug something in and you see current draw that one is the problem area.

If when you unplug everything there is still current draw it's likely to be the clocks.

what about the ignition key switch could that be at fault

Not unless you put the battery back on the bike.

When you say circuit tester are you referring to a multimeter or just a 12v test light. If you put a test light across the positive and negative you will get current whether the ignition is on or off as all your doing is seeing if there is any current in the battery. I think you need to put a multimeter across the battery and test the R/R as the other day you said it was giving out 13v with lights on or off with not fluctuations.

Disconnecting a battery will discharge it as well as air is a conductor. Hopefully not as fast as leaving it connected, depending on if you have something on the bike drawing current from it and by how much.

cyber carl the battery is on my worktop being charged so there is no voltage apart from the 9v battery in the circuit tester so i assume there is something wrong please help cos i know bugger all about the alchemy that is bike electrics

You need a multimeter to do any thorough checks on the electrical system a circuit tester is very basic and will just tell you whether something is live or not. Are you still running the original unfinned Honda regulator rectifier. You will find it to the side of the battery behind the right hand side rear fairing.

If the battery is not holding a charge then the battery is either knackered from old age or overheated and damaged from an overcharging R/R. So either way the battery would need replacing. If the battery is OK and holding a charge then it's either not getting charged by the R/R or there is something on the bike drawing excess current from it.

The first thing to check is the R/R as this is a simple task with a multimeter. With the engine running it should be putting out anything between 12.6v and 14.8 DC. If the R/R is fine then the battery is either knackered or there is something on the bike drawing current. There's no point just replacing the battery unless you can verify that the R/R is not overcharging otherwise it could kill the new battery.

Have you got an alarm or anything running on the bike while it's switched off. Heated grips maybe if wired into a permanent live.

right been out tonight and disconected everything like tony said no current drain with ignition off , plugged every thing back in apart from the rectifier, still showing no drain turn ignition on shows a current drain ignition off no drain all happy plug rectifier in current drain with or without ignition on/off also noticed a pin hole in the rectifier and looks like its oozed some gunk out so take it its fooked

as i use the bike every day has anyone near to lincoln got a spare i could purchase or borrow till i get a replacement

Should have junked the old unfinned R/R before it caused problems - Anyhoo this is plug'n'play - though you might need to replace battery as that can often get damaged when R/R dies a death.
