unistrut bead breaker

Post by benny hedges »

needed a space saving tyre bead breaker after struggling yesterday so i made this.

Image

bits -

200mm 41/41 unistrut bracket
2m 3/4 galv pipe
25mm pipe clamp
m1 wall plate
m12 rawlbolts
m10 studding, nuts, bolts, washers

i flattened the pipe a bit with my wammer so it'd fit in the unistrut, and drilled a 10mm hole in thend & rounded it off so it can move up & down - took up the slack either side with washers and 2 m10 nuts inside the pipe so it can't crush
Image

fitted a pipe clip with a bolt at first, but the bolt popped a hole in the tyre lol - just as well it wasn't a new one or i'd be well pissed off!
Image

mark2 - used a length of m10 studding with a m10 wall plate to spread the load against the tyre
Image

bingo  works spot on. thats my knee pad on the floor so it doesn't mark the rim on the floor - might put a bit of carpet under it after instead.
Image

it makes the job easier by soaping the bead as soon as it pushes down.... then it breaks with no effort.
Image

mark3 - i'll use a sliding collar over the 3/4 pipe with high tensile studding instead of the mild steel, which bends too easy. if i tap some grub screws in the collar i'll be able to adjust it to fit different height wheels.
Image

just for practice i popped off the old tyres off my firestorm wheels..... result
win number 2 is i found my 2ft levers and rim protectors, but dont need them now if i use the cable tie method.
next job is to make a balancing frame with some 450mm unistrut brackets......

just had a look what bits ive got in the garage and decided to fit a 1" equal tee over the 3/4 pipe, with a grubscrew in the pipe to stop it slipping, and an 8" piece of 1" pipe looking down, with the cone end of a union at the bottom to push against the tyre.

if i cut the top thread long enough i'll be able to lock it in position by clamping the 1" pipe against the 3/4 pipe
i'll add a pic when ive done it.

was thinking.... if i put another bracket on the other side of the garage with a padlock through it i can chain my bike to it.

mushroom the rawlbolts and pivot over or put a blob of weld on them....and use a bit of prison technology so it can't be sawn through..... a length of 1/2" pipe inside the 3/4 pipe....
they use this on prison bars... if you try to saw through them, the bar on the inside rotates and snaps the blade.
sort of a dual purpose thing, seeing as i'll only use the bead breaker now & then.

I use the blade from and old garden spade. It's got just the right curvature to sit against the wheel rim and I then have 2 lengths of 2*4 wood and a ratchet strap at the pivot end ( my favourite solution to almost every problem :D ) and then standon the free end and bobs your uncle
