timing
hi all mt first post so be gentle, i have a 2000 firestorm and the dreaded cct on the front has failed, i have read through other posts which are great help but cant find any info on putting timming correct if it has jumped out, i have both cam covers off when the rear is in ft through the side cover and the r1 and re are level with the the top and lobes facing each other am i right to asume that the front should be facing away from each other and if there not how do i alter this ?
im sure ive bent a valve as when i turn engine over through the 17mm socket anti clockwise its very notchey any advise on where i can get fixed in gillingham area

If you think its a valve you have a couple of options. Either take the head off and check visually or get a compression tester and check everything is within spec.

i wish i had read through all these posts before i had the problem i think i would be riding now my own fault
when rear is set up with lobes facing in etc the front is not facing outwards ive spun it round again and no mater where its turned they dont face away on the front when the rear is set up does this mean it has jumped and how do i adjust it, im sorry if i sound real thick here just cant get me head round it

Welcome to the forum, sorry that your first post is about and engine failure, but hopefully we can help you fixit.
Firstly don't keep turning the engine too much till you have reset the timing. Get the offending cylinder to its correct tdc (i assume it is the front pot) then remove the cct and the top chain cover (make sure youput rags down the cam chain tunnel so you dont drop the bolt). With the chain slack you should be able to rotate the cams till the timing marks line up with the cyl heas (a small morror is a big help here) if you cant get them moving because of the chain, unbolt the cam bearing caps on one cam and it will give you more freedom.
Withe the cam Bearing caps back on check the valve clearance, if any often are much too big...sorry but you have a bent valve and you need to remove the head
BUT
if the clearances are all ok,then you were lucky, but you now need a new CCT before you can go any further.
The front and rear lobes won't face in / face out at the same time, so I am not sure if you have misread the instructions or if I am misreading your post. But from the tdc where the rears face in, you have to turn the engine 450deg to the front tdc...and in this position the front cam lobes should be facing out and their timing marks should be level with the head.

The rear should be at RT not FT (F for front and R for rear) The cams should point upwards and inwards and the rear cam sprockets marked with RI (rear inlet) and RE (rear exhaust) which should line up horizontally along the top of the cylinder head. For the front the crank should be on FT and the cams pointing upwards and outwards with the marks FI and FE on the cam sprockets.when the rear is in ft through the side cover and the r1 and re are level with the the top and lobes facing each other am i right to asume that the front should be facing away from each other

followed all the posts "perfect" thank you, i have set up timing etc and had to take the front head off as the valve clearances were huge and on inspection all four are bent, i have noticed on the top of the piston a couple of marks where the valves have hit does this mean the piston is now knackered ? if so the bike will have to be sold for the spares gutted, i have some help with the valves however no point if the piston is ruined can anyone help

Not necessarily so - keep and eye out for a front head to transplant on.
It may be that your whole purpose in life is simply to serve as a warning to others.

Im not 100% sure but yes I think so, it's the same model bike so head should be exactly the same.

cyl head off the older bike will fit fine.
re the piston..... if its damaged anything it will be the big end bearing but you wont know til you run it.
chances are its only kissed the piston and marked the carbon deposits on top.
You do not have to say anything. But it may harm your defence if you do not mention when posting something which you later rely on in quote. Anything you do say may be ripped to sh*t.

That's what I was thinking. Just give it a de-coke (clean up the carbon deposits) and check the condition of the piston crown more thoroughly. Got any pics.chances are its only kissed the piston and marked the carbon deposits on top.
Note benny said you can swap the valves over from a rear head, be aware you cannot put a rear head on the front. But a rear head is a good way of getting the parts as new valves will be more expensive.
