SV 650 problem !
SV 650 problem !
Ok so its not a storm but it is my sons and I have to fix it for him !!
I know some of you lads came up from the sv to the storm so thought I might pick your brains before I take a hammer to it .
It keeps on flattening the battery , was out on it sun did about 250 mls went really well then poped back through the can and died flat battery, so bumped it and managed to get it home , it did this last year so after much investigation decided the batt was f..ked replaced it a d all was well until sun.
Have followed the haynes manual and used a multimeter to check out rec/reg and alternator and all apears to be well, he went off to work this morning no probs then it wouldnt start at 5 when he finished, so is there a mod required as in our rec mod or some thing I am at a loss !

Re: SV 650 problem !
Initially it all points to reg/rec, It's worth testing again, also make sure all the conectors are good and clean. I'm thinking also it could be cheap low quality battery, it pays to get the best you can, if the battery is good then it should read at least 12.8v without the bike running, again if it's good it'll recover itself after a rest, put a multimeter on it. Do you leave the bike on an optimate all the time, i've found leaving them on for long periods has knackered previously good batteries, i now charge mine once every 2 weeks in winter to keep it topped up.

Re: SV 650 problem !
Dosent really need the optimate as he uses it on a daily basis I imediatly thought of reg/rec but shows ok on the multi gonna pull it all down on sat and check all the connectors wiring and go from there just wondering if this was a typical sv problem

Re: SV 650 problem !
I know this sounds really simple and I only mention this as I a similar problem with my cbf125. Have u checked to make sure the battery terminals are secure. My 125 had a slightly crossed thread so when tightened, felt it was alright however it cut out on me several times and wouldn't start.
Let us know if you find the problem as I have recently gt a sv.
Ps have u fiddled with the clutch kill switch as this a common weak point. A lot in the forum short this.

Re: SV 650 problem !
Steve, it could be worth joining the SV forum and asking the lads there as they will know the repeat problems with the bike. For my money it sounds like a reg rec, so worth changing anyway

Re: SV 650 problem !
Have you checked the output from the stator? If this is shot then this would run the battery down too.

Two bikes, still only four cylinders!

Theres A Hare in The Turnips.
Re: SV 650 problem !
That should be part of the R/R tests, but good point as a lot of people forget to test an R/R fully and just see if they are outputting enough and forget about the input side.

Re: SV 650 problem !
Yep checked out RR alternator and what wiring I can get at before weekend when will be pulling it apart, however he now informs me both clocks were going haywire just before it died dont know if that helps with anything, have got new RR coming bloody expensive compared to storm nearly 80 quid !! but cant rely on used dont know what your getting
