Airbox

Hi, i know kemper162 asked about the the sponge bits in his airbox were no good yesterday, when i took my air filter off mine didn't have anything in at all is there a reason why someone would take them out? will any sponge be ok to put in there?

It could be one of two reasons as to why they are not there. One they have just been left out by someone or two they have totally disinterested and have been sucked into the carbs and bits fallen out the holes in the bottom of the airbox.

Any foam is OK but try to use something similar that does not have the air holes to compacted together as it will possibly restrict the airflow and preferably something that is resistant to chemicals. As mentioned in the other thread some air filter foam or aquarium foam filter material is ideal. Also give them a light coat of oil before putting them in place.

Thanks for your reply, i will sort that when my new air filter arrives, never enjoyed myself as much as working on this bike, not too technical.

yes it does mate. i have to say when i first bought my bike several years ago, it didn't have those foam bits either, if i'm honest, i didn't think it made any difference to how the bike ran....
but its better to have them in or blocked off.
this will do you, its a touch on the thick side tho

It wont make a difference to how it runs as all they are doing is filtering the atmospheric air that goes into the carb diaphragm's. So is basically just stopping any particles from getting into the carbs. As for blocking them off, no you can't do that or you will encounter problems unless you leave the hose disconnected underneath.

I have no problems, mine are blocked off with rubber caps that are the same shape and the pipes still connected...I do have a K&N filter fitted though if that makes any difference..

There wasn't any filters I them when I got the bike so never bothered getting any...filter sponge is now on my shopping list though

Agreed part of the K&N kit are the rubber plugs to block off these ports, no mention about the pipe under the box. Would it harm to block them off regardless??

Well, yes, as these are allowing the air on the internal side of the diaphragm in the carb to escape to atmosphere.

So the diaphragm won't move properly.

Unless you do as I have and blank off the airbox inlet, removing the corners, plating across them, so increasing airbox volume, and then placing small foam caps on each diaphragm exhaust pipe....

Don't expect another 20Bhp, though, it's part of much bigger work. On its own it won't make any difference you can notice.
