Don't forget to service your shock....

Post by 8541Hawk »

Or don't let this happen to you......
There have been threads about the need to look after your lower shock linkage but there is another bit down there that might cause you some grief....

So for the back story, things have been more than a bit hectic that last few years which has led me to put off my shock rebuild for a while longer than I normally would.
Though I could tell it was time as it was feeling not "right" lately and was just arranging things for the down time as the bike is my olny transportation.

So with all that I had the bike out in the twisties and was just having a bit of fun.
I rolled up behind another bike and he took off... well what fun I think as I wick it up to see what he has.
First corner, no issues, the next corner, hit the apex and suddenly it feels like I'm riding a pogo stick :eek2

Pull over and do a quick check, no damping at all..... so I figured I blew a seal or something.
So I nurse her home and pull the shock and this is what I found:

What actually happened was the lower spherical bearing seized and sheared the shaft off.
The only up side, besides making it home in one piece, is that when I get it back it will now have a ride height adjustment.

So take care of your rear shock or it might become unhappy with you

Use the IMG Code with photobucket. No need to add tags as they are supplied by PB.

eek..............thats not a good thing for any shock to do!!!!!!!!! let alone a high cost part like Ohlins, you were lucky to get home. I would be chasing ohlins for a free repair and a statement on rootcause, that is a safety critical failure mode and needs investigated.

Also I am not sure that a service would have prevented that unless they replaced the rod as a service item.............that just looks like a materials issue or a design weakness,

My old Firestorm had an Ohlins on it, I sold the bike to a friend and they still have it, at about 20k they had to take the shock off and get it rebuilt as it had seized on the bottom mount, this could have been avoided if the linkages and bottom mount had been regularly serviced (cleaned and re greased). If left seized too long then it's entirely possible that the shock would have broken, the forces have to go somewhere.
