How to: fit a fag lighter

Post by Ckennedy »

I know this is an easy thing for most of you to do but for those who are not so good with electrics/mechanics while I fitted mine today I thought I would take some pics and do a quick how to guide for those out there who require a bit of guidance.

First thing to do is remove the seat to gain access to the battery:
Image

2nd: Get a waterproof fuse holder and fit a 10amp fuse
Image

3rd: Strip the ends off of some twin core cable and fit a ring terminal to each wire for the battery screw to go through.
Image

4th: Cut through the power wire and fit in the waterproof fuse holder using heat shrink terminals. Remember to heat these with a lighter to make waterproof.
Image

5th: Cut the wire where you want to mount the on/off switch:

6th: Cut another piece of twin core to go from the 2nd terminal on the on/off switch and fit a spade terminal. This is the power feed for the lighter. The other wire goes is negative and is crimped with the negative wire from the battery.
Image

7th: Fit your wires to the switch. Power in to number 1. Power out to number 2. Negative from the socket and the battery to number 3.
Image

8th: This is where I drilled the hole for my switch. Just below the seat between the frame and fairing. If you decide to use this place be careful of the wiring loom and the battery. Drilling through either of these will cause a nasty mess.
Image

9th: Connect your ring terminals to the battery and test with a charger to your satnav/phone or what ever.

I forgot to get a pic of the switch in place so you will have to use you imagination. Hope this will help someone out there at some point.

I was not planning on using it to light a fag. I would also like to know how you would light a fag with your helmet on?

When I was despatch riding around London I used to smoke while on the bike in slow moving traffic. The only problem was the hot rocks blowing back in my face

Barry Sheene, Dads got some pictures of him on the grid having a smoke via a hole drilled in his helmet that he used to tape back over, extreme!

i have one of these wired direct to the batt and cable tied to the lock barrel so its in front of my key, don't bother about a switch a gps and phone drains wombles all

i just used a bike battery in my room for 5 days charging a phone, using it down to like 30% then plugging it back into to the bike battery to charge it as i had broke my mains charger

there is still juice in the bike batt too

i was going to bin the batt awhile ago as it did not have enough umph left init to turn over the fireblade but off a single charge can power the phone for 5+ days with heavy use so if i go camping with the bird using the car ill charge the bike batt and take that in the tent as a away from home mains charger

Sorry to change thread slightly, I now have a similar undertray. Can you advise how you have secured the CDI boxes to stop rattling around. I see they are cable tied together? Thanks

Cable tie together and then a cable tie around the both of them to the sub frame. I could have thought of other ways but at the time I couldnt be bothered to think

When I get my undertray on I'm thinking of using some foam, the kind you get in flight cases for cameras or whatever. I can then cut out bits for the electronics, toolkit etc to sit in.
