Electrics Suddenly Totally Dead!

Replaced the regulator about a couple of months ago, and have had numerous long and short runs plus a track day with no problems. Went out for a run on Sat and all was ok till I got home and parked up. Then went out to put the bike in the garage, turned it on, and pressed the start button. 1 crank of the engine and them everything went totally dead. Clocks lights everything blank.

turned of and then on again, and eventually the lights on the clocks gradually got brighter, but not normal. Bumped it to get it round the back of the house to the garage and it would run and lights work when revving, but on idle everything was dead.

Put the optimate on the battery in and out of the bike and it goes nuts. doesn't know what to do with it. Haven't managed to get it going again yet to check the voltage across the terminals to make sure the regulator is pumping the correct voltage in, but at the moment, the battery is reading about 13.5 volts on the bench???, but wil not even run the lights on the clocks.??

Have ordered a new battery and hope this resolves it, but does anyone have any other ideas or have experience something similar?

Check the plug on the r/r as it can melt and wires touch .

What R/R did you replace the old one with? MOSFET (Yamaha R1/R6) type, a later Honda OEM finned or a cheap ebay chinese copy?

Have you cleaned electrical connections up as after winter they can get corroded and build up resistance. Hopefully new battery will get you up and running. Make sure the battery terminal connections are nice & clean and tight as they can vibrate loose causing electrical power to fail intermittently.

No harm in replacing the battery though as they do deteriorate with time and there is the possibility that the old R/R took out the battery when it went wrong. I would wait and see if it holds a charge first. In the meantime check that the new R/R earth has got a good solid connection. Which one did you replace it with and was the older overcharging or did it have some other issue.

The old regulator was a finned honda one and it has been replaced with another finned honda one. So hoping it hasn't gone in 2 months. Once i get the new battery I will know for definate if it is a battery issue, regulator issue or a wiring issue. Will just be a case of tracking it down.

If you replaced the RR due to failure but didnt replace the battery, then its the likely suspect. They arent deep cylce so a failed RR could easily spell doom.(for the battery, not you)

Also make sure your ground connections and clean and tight.
