Thanks for the maths lesson Kaz  . Now I can understand what you guys are on about  . Gotta understand d&s. I imagine hanging out on a submarine for work, you'd wanna get a bit of speed up when you can access two wheels. A lot of the fellas I ride with are train drivers & they have the same issue... They're all mad! :)

to work out speeds from kph to mph just times by 0.62137119

You can also get an approximate answer by multiplying x5 then divide by 8
Say you want to convert 100 KPH into MPH

IE. 100x5=500 then 500 -:-8=62.5
Its easier that way if you have to do it in your head, or on paper,
Chris.

I suppose you're one of these people who were allowed to use a calculator at school 8O Showing my age now,

So what is the supposed top speed of a stock 98 VTR then? I had mine nailed (for the first and probably only time.....I wanted to know how fast it would go 8O ) and it maxed out at 145ish on the clock on a level piece of road. My car goes faster than that (same crap fuel consumption though).

Now considering the speedo is supposed to overread I wonder what that really was. Ok I am not the lightest of peeps at 100kg but still....

Maybe I should go count the teeth on my sprockets (secondhand, new to me bike)?

The Internet isn't just porn and bike forums you know. Have a look here

I tend to do the "times 5 and divide by 8" thing though. I have a CBR600 with kph clocks so I sometimes need to work this stuff out without being able to use a calculator or a computer ;)

The most I've done on thew road is about 145. First time was on a Ducati 900SS back in the early '80s. A41 Newport bypass, about 5am on a Sunday - I wouldn't do it now though.

that's strange

Well, 145 mph is 235 km/h - no way. I did real 224 on 600cc Hornet with bikini fairing.
Fastest I did on Storm was 241 km/h according to GPS (real speed, I did not even look at speedo), but it was not maxed out, I slowed down because saw car in front.
Magazines actually put max speed of Storm (thout 97 model) at around 150-153 mph, so I wonder why the hell 98 model max out at 145 by speedo (would be about 137 real)????
I am dissapointed
Does that mean that my GPS tells bullshit??? It seemed to be correct in a car... :?:

That's something to check, 145 does not sound right! And if not sprockets - then mixture could be wrong at high RPM....

Top of the Evening guys,
I've sprinted up to 260 kph before I ran out of road on a trip north of here, but that was speedo indicated when I had a quick glance down before buttoning off. When I've used my GPS the speedo seems to be out about 10 percent most of the time after 60 Kph. At 110kph on the speedo the GPS shows 100kph. So I figure that the 260 was about 240 in reality. Was getting rather windy. :D
Since I've got my storm jetted, it is a little lean as it goes up above 7500 rpm on the tacho, so the power falls away towards the high numbers, but since most of my riding is around 4 its not a big problem.
My other job is navigator on an Intergalactic
Spice Freighter

Red (of course) 99 storm. Vance & Hines SS2 cans, Dynajet kit and K&N filter.

Hi all,

Thanks for the replies.

Actually I am not that worried about top speed as for me the fun comes in accelerating.....and my bike does that :D ! My mate on his power commandered, dynoed, new cans Aprilia Tuono has trouble sticking with me mid range  (mind you, we don't call him Tall Tim for nothing  ) Actually I think something is not set up right as his bike stinks of unburnt petrol when trundling through traffic, figured fuel injection shouldn't do that? Anyway I digress...

I really will have to check the sprockets. I am also about to (well it is raining  ) do some work on it. Nothing too major, got some manual CCT's from APE in the USA, (4 days to my doorstep in the UK, how cool is that!) , new oil/air filter, new cushdrive rubbers (to be done when I change the tyre).

Have got a carbtune kit and will balance the carbs. Hopefully that will cure the snorting and coughing from underneath the tank. Will also spin the overflow pipes as suggested on a few sites.

Might drill some holes in the exhaust just to see if I can free some of that V-Twin music but not so much that Mr Plod cares. I bought a pair of unused stock cans from ebay so I can just put them on if I mess it up. I am tempted to perform a full bafflectomy  but then I will probably have to re-jet, dyno, etc,etc and I just can't be bothered. IMHO Honda normally gets it pretty good for real world use.

The only other thing that does concern me a tad is that my clutch has a tendency to snatch (oi! :) ). If I pull away smoothly no problems but occasionally if I am revving it for a fast(ish!) launch, then as I ease out the lever I get nothing, nothing, a horrible whine, screech from the clutch and a vicious take up. Doesn't happen everytime though. Ideas? Even better, fixes?

Gotta say I love this bike though. I feel that as an average rider at best the VTR really does look out for me, I might be freaked at being a bit hot into a bend, or worried about that manhole cover but it isn't. I reckon that if I get to use 70% of what it is capable of then I am doing ok. (I saw that fast bikes vid of the VTR yesterday. Oh my. So that's what 100% looks like then. Brilliant fun, right up until he takes it to 101% )

Blimey...back to work
