New kid on the block

Post by flynavyj »

Hey all,

Just joined the forum earlier today, and am glad to be here. I purchased a 2002 VTR1000 Super Hawk (i'm in the US) about a week ago, and have been LOVING the bike so far. It's my 5th motorcycle, and my second v-twin sport bike (2nd bike was an SV650). I joined superhawkforum.com which I believe is the US version of this bike, but considering how much more popular the big Twin is in Europe I imagine this site will be much more active. I'll probably be on both websites some, but look forward to learning as much as I can from you guys. My VTR was put down at one point by the previous owner, has a little damage to the right side case, it's up 2 teeth in the back and gets horrible gas mileage (around 30 mpg). I replaced the rear brake pads for safety, and need to replace a fork seal to be happy. Next things on my list are Manual CCT's, then I'll start looking at other "future" modifications.

Would like to go with superbike styled bars (similar to a Ducati Monster or my previous SV650N) and some lowered pegs to give more leg room. To better the bike for my commute (about 20 miles one way, mostly interstate) I think I'll go back to a stock rear sprocket, and will likely replace the chain at the same time (it's in ok shape, but changing all will let things wear together). Stainless brake lines would be a great addition too, and might look at another repaint as the fairings aren't "beautifully" done from the former cosmetic damage. Added a couple pictures of the bike, a couple from the seller, and a few after I purchased it and cleaned it up some.

Welcome to the forum, nice looking bike. I fitted superbike bars to my bike over the winter and am very happy with the way the bike feels now

There is a thread in the workshop section

Welcome aboard flynavyj

Your bike looks like a tidy machine, I like the black cans against the red paintwork 8)
You seem to be aware of the possible CCT issues, so that's good.

oh, and being British we're oh so polite, so to translate - I like the black cans and shame the rest of the bike isn't black

Thanks for the replies/welcomes! I'll be planning to look for new CCT's and purchase them within the next week or so. Does anyone have a brand of manual CCT's they recommend?

I've also recently seen some posts where folks have used VFR clip ons to get a more upright seating position...which seems to save lots of $$ over the aftermarket yokes and risers. Does anyone have links to some affordable riser/yoke combos? I think I like the risers setup a bit more for aesthetics instead of the higher VFR or even helibars/convertibars.
