Valve cover bolt

Post by ebenviljoen »

Hi chaps, did my cct's saturday and yesterday. One of my bolts for the rear valve cover fell from the bike and the thread at the front broke off! luckily it fell and didn't break off in the engine casing. Think it was over tightened when the valve clearance was checked previously. I can't find any online, does anyone know where to buy them from? Or is it a case of calling my nearest honda dealer? Saw there is a cover with bolts on ebay, but for 25 quid. don't fancy paying that for a bolt! lol

Had a massive task getting the inspection caps off, nasty little things. got new ones sorted though. I was inventing my own new language while doing it! lol

Use http://www.ronayers.com (bookmark) fiche to find the Honda number (be aware its a US site so some of the parts differ from UK but 98% of the time they are the same)

http://www.ronayers.com/CYLINDER-HEAD-C ... 05403.aspx

Then with the part no. copy&paste it in http://www.davidsilverspares.co.uk/part ... rt-number/

Yeah those bolts do get overtightened and are easy to break.

I had one snap off in the head, so just snug them down or you are asking for trouble......... yes I had to pull the head to repair the issue.... :Ball Kick:

Valve cover bolts should only be torqued down to 10 NM or 7.37 ftp. Definitely invest in a decent torque wrench I'm using mine all the time.

I have seen easily twice the number of broken fasteners by those using a tq wrench then those that were tightening non critical fasteners by hand and feel.

Unless your going to invest in quality, calibrated TQ wrench in several tq ranges so that your only using them in the center 60% of the range... Fasteners like valve cover bolts are better off snugged up lightly by hand.... at least in my experiences .

Though I do have 6 tq Wrenches in the roll-away and one TW screwdriver .. so Im not being hypocritical in my position, just cautions in that, a TQ wrench is only part of the answer.
