Mini foam filter missing...??

Post by Jamoi »

Hi, just a quickie....!

Can someone tell me what the 2 little foam filters do, located under the air filter? While doing the stopper mod yesterday, I noticed one of the foam bits was only half complete, as if it had been ripped in half exposing two of the holes it is supposed to cover.

Guess what I've just remembered... Left the fuel tap turned off! DOH!

Glad the stopper mod worked okay - Has the R/R arrived yet?

Thanks Wicky

Should hopefully get my R/R today, then it's party time! :D

Just hope I've done the cct's correctly... Won't find out till the R/R comes then I can fire it up.

Just buy a sheet of cheap air filter foam off ebay and cut your own out. Genuine parts will be expensive.

Cheers Carl, have ordered some foam & filter oil.

Wish I didn't have to take the tank off again though, those tubes are a pita :Argue 1:

Just been through Alresford but on the train - if you need my spare R/R if there's any delay let me know.

You can turn the bike slowly over from the access hole in the alternator like you must have done when setting the timing. Easier with the plugs out.

Cheers Wicky, your very kind! My reg/rec should turn up tomorrow so, I'll pop it on as soon as.

I've come to the decision, I'm going to pull my front cct out again! When I cut the 8mm rod to go in, it was a tight fit (length ways) and as I tightened the two bolts holding the tensioner in to the barrel it felt like I was clamping the chain up a bit too tight, it's been playing on my mind and I've got to take the air box off again anyway.

Do you see what I mean? It's like I made the 8mm rod too long and I've forced the cct in using the two fixing bolts, I'd rather take a mm off and have 0.5mm slack... What you think?? :confused

Yep, there shouldn't be any tension when tightening the mounting screws, assuming you had the spring plunger fully retracted against the stopper.
It's not falling off, it's an upgrade opportunity.

Thanks Tony.mon,

I think the last 0.5mm of tightening the cct into the engine was "under tension" which now I'm realising isn't good! So I'll pull it & shave a mm off the 8mm rod, and make sure I've got a 1/4 turn free when fitted.

Feeling less of a mechanical engineering god now.. Well, it felt good for a day

Did you wind the worm 1/2 turn clockwise and lock it off before removing the tensioner? it's a 1/4 on the rear! If you want to check the tension on the chain which is a bit of a pain on the front as there is a bit more work to remove cam cover. There should be about 5mm play in the chain between the two cam sprockets while on the compression stroke.

Argh there's your mistake, that may explain it as it's 1/2 turn on the front. So you could be a 1/4 turn out which would explain the tension.

Set the front cylinder to TDC on the compression stroke, turn the worm 1/2 turn clockwise (not 1/4) and lock it off, remove the tensioner and re-do the 8mm rod.

Gotcha! Brill, thanks for that Carl.

Glad my r/r is dead, means I haven't had a chance to fire up the engine and put my sketchy engineering to the test
