You'll never guess what's happened :D

Post by Virt »

I know, ambiguous title... But do you really need a specific one?

Riding to work this morning, about halfway to work I started feeling a loss of power around 6000-7000rpm (which is odd. Normally I can just about outpace a moped while in 5th gear doing those revs) and as I slowed down there was a strange noise coming from below me on the bike, on the left side...

Can't really describe the noise all that well, was kind of like an insects' wings in tempo and noticeably loud. I dropped down revs and gears to see if it would go away but it was intermittent and came and went with no distinguishable pattern. Took a bit more care riding the last mile or two to work, and when the bike was idling in neutral it was really loud I noticed. I'll see if I can get a soundclip on my lunch break (if it makes the sound again)

Apart from the slight loss of power (anything more than slight and I'd be in negative) there doesn't seem to be anything noticeably wrong with how the bike feels and handles.. it's just the sound.. Any ideas what it may be?

Sorry for the ambiguous post as well. But I'm stoopid and don't know anything

Also gonna point out this is on the hornet. It has a manual CCT and I have no idea, how would I check?

Is this the decrepit Hornet or neutered Storm? or as Mac alludes, a push bike....

Have you ridden through a wasp or hornet swarm? carefully partly open your visor and have same antihistamine ointment handy.
It may be that your whole purpose in life is simply to serve as a warning to others.

if you can reach the manual cct bolt see if it moves my hand. like the storm, if the locknut comes undone then the vibration will push the CCT out and the chain will go slack.

It's easily accessible, sticks right out with a nice touch of pink to make the hornet manly. I've got my lunch break in about 10 minutes so I'll check it then and post back, and hope I have the right tools in my toolkit if that's the case

Which would the locknut be? The larger or smaller of the two?

Sounds to me like your describing an electrical buzz noise. You may also want to check that that there is not a flap or panel loose that is vibrating somewhere.

It isn't electric. I've had loaaads of electrical problems and it doesn't sound anything like them. I tried turning it back on to check just now and there was a really choppy sound from the engine block, something was definitely loose. However because my brother has stolen everything from my toolkit (even though his VFR came with a complete one) I can't tighten it or do anything until this evening when he comes over.. Else I'm stranded here. Brill.

good news that CCT is not loose, but bad news that it is still sounding sick.

usual thoughts will be to check anything that you, your brother or your dad touuched in the last month, and make sure it hasnt fallen off

then take it to Lloydie and ...... well you know the rest :o

Mmm... Gonna see if it needs tightening anyway after work, cause something is definitely loose inside the engine block.

  Oh lloydie, what would I do without him?

Who knows, but walking would probably be a lot easier
