Exhaust systems

Post by mjw »

Can anyone recommend a good 'rumbley', but road legal exhaust for my firestorm. Standard are just a bit standard and my art ones are mentally loud, illegal and proving to attract too much police attention?!

Hello and welcome

Just drill out the baffle from the standard exhaust .
This give you a nice deep tone without getting a asbo

Thanks guys. Without sounding like I am desperate to spend money ...my original cans are pretty battered (thanks to previous owner) so am keen to put on new, art cans are old, with no add on baffles and are rivet sealed. Are you suggesting I drill out the rivots and insert wadding?
Oh, two other issues are that they are stamped with 'not for road use' and mess up the tuning!
Am at the point of ebaying the arts, buying new and having it tuned to suit.
...so wondered if anyone could recommend a brand of good aftermarket road legal ones?

Thanks. Are scorpions any good?
(Sorry about silly questions, 9 years out of the motorcycling scene, just returned to it).
Is that your blue storm, like the white on the seat cover, did you have it made as a special?

if there was 3 divisions of exhaust manufacturers, i'd put scorpians at the top of the second division. I haven't heard of anyone having problems with them.....
the number boards on my bike are from a fellow member on here, you can buy them from a few places.
I got mine from mactat iirc.
I think they look good but as you'll find out, my taste or lack of taste is well known on the forum....

Scorpions are good.
Have them fitted to mine (albeit race cans..... )
Nice deep tone and never had any issues.

I don't think they are marked up as race cans though and are road legal. If you have the chance to get some Scorpians then it's a very good choice of exhaust. Very popular in the VTR world.

Scorpian cans don't require re-jetting as long as you have the standard air filter, but would benefit from it. It's when you go changing from standard filters to hi flo aftermarket filters that really upsets things.

I have to agree on this point also. To give my example, I used to tun a set of Erion cans.
I would rate these right along with Scorpions as top of the second tier. The reason has to do with the fit not the quality of the can itself.
The cans are great, it's the mid-pipes where the difference shows up.

With the Erions you did need to pay attention to the spacing between the can and the swingarm.
If you just bolted them on, you would get rubbing and the mount tabs didn't line up perfect...close but again a little work and a bit of playing around with a washer stack was needed to get them to fit properly.
Finally the mids were rather thin tubing.

Now the Leo's I have on there now are a different story.
Not only did the mids come with new carbon gaskets installed but the fit perfect.
The install was slide them on until they bottom and rotate them into position. The mounting tabs line up with the rearsets perfect, just bolt them down and tighten up the high quality allen head clamps.
Then slide the cans on with the same result, perfect alinement to the swingarm....... in fact they were the easiest set of slip-ons I have even installed.

So these are my reasons for recommending the best set you can actually afford.
The cheap exhaust systems are just that cheap...... expect to fiddle with them and who knows how long they will last.

The other systems, well they all are good.....my Erions were on the bike for 10yrs and worked fine, until I laid the bike down

Just remember that there is a reason why some of the systems are a bit more $$ (as I don't have a pound sign.....lol) and as there is really no noticeable power differences, it comes down to,
Are you willing to pay for a better fit and finish or would you rather take the time to get things to line up properly.

As always YMMV

and we haven't even touched on the carbon cans on a VTR...... and why I stick to Al cans
Loud pipes don't save lives, knowing how to ride your bike will save your life.

Scorpions are just fine using a set on mine. Again heed Cyber's note in that they dont like high flow filters. I can agree with this having tried a K&N filter. The bike hated it. Back to standard & all is fine again. I also find it feels more responsive when I use the DB killers. The sound is still reasonable just not as thunderous. Anyhow without the DB's in next to Playerone's Delkavics it is positively quiet. :D
