Strange brake noise

So further to this post:

Went out to bed in my brakes and they make a weird buzzing sound. Sort of like live electricity. I got the bike up to about 100 and braked down to about 20 fairly quickly quite a few times.

The buzzing gets worse the faster the bike is travelling. Starts at about 20mph. It makes a noise even with a very light pull on the lever. Gets a little louder if the lever is pulled hard. Noise persists for a second or so after pressure is released on lever.

I checked everything was tight, eg caliper mounting bolts, banjos, pins etc and it is. I then went out on my brother's ZX6 as we did the same work to his brakes. His makes almost the exact same noise.

Neither bike made a noise before the work.

Both bikes had:
Calipers removed
Pads removed
Calipers split
Pistons removed
Pistons cleaned and reinserted
Calipers reattached
New EBC HH pads fitted on both bikes
Pads had the metal plates from the old pads fitted and a little copper grease applied to the back of the plate
Calipers refitted to the bike
Brake fluid refilled and bled

I have also bled my bike a second time from the master cylinder nipple to make sure all the air was out.


So.....is it something to do with the pads? Do these sort of pads make this noise when new or throughout their life?

What other issues could cause the noise if not the pads?

Really want to get this fixed before Benny's funeral on Friday. Ill be absolutely gutted if I miss this because of not having my bike

Er I could be wrong here, but a nice hiss when you brake should be normal, its the air escaping through the holes in the disc, there's a lot of pressure going on down there when you clamp em up hard.

There should also be a bit of a ''wizz'' noise any way as the discs are floating & in effect rattling about.

I'm sure someone will be along shortly to debunk my post but as far as I'm aware, breaks should hiss & wizz.

Pretty much all HH pads make a bit of noise when in use......

I agree. My fireblade was noisy as wombles on the brakes...proper hissed they did yet always did the job under hard braking, although I rate the sp's brakes better.

Oh, well, if so then that's good, but none of my previous bikes have done that. The bike didn't make anything like that sort of noise before I changed the pads

Yes put in new EBC HH pads. The old ones were HH but not EBC afaik.

So seems that it's the EBC pads. It's very strange that they make this noise though.

Never mind, ill get used to it.

Yes mate they feel like they are working well. No vibration or anything and they bite very nicely.

Obviously brakes are very important, so any strange noises are quite worrying. I was less worried when I tested my brother's ZX and it made the same noise, and even less worried now you guys have said that EBC pads make that noise.

Does anyone actually know what it is about those pads that make them 'buzz'?

Might sound odd mate but just check if you keep the metal backing/anti sqeaul plates with ebc pads,seem to remember reading somewhere they have a vented back.hope this helps

I've fitted ebc brakes before and had the same problem,I contacted ebc to ask if this was normal, they said their pads have a coating on them to help bed them in during this bedding in process you may experience a noise( similar to a low flying spitfire is how they described it )after a while the noise did get quieter.

CORRR!! I thought my Storm sounded good until I heard this clip!

My new EBC HH pads make that "live electric" noise too, lets me know they're working ;)

How long have you had yours in? And they are still making that noise now?

They've been in for around 200miles, mixed riding. Still make the same sound, I wouldn't worry! It's just a trait of the pads.

I've ridden a few bikes with the same pads, same noise. As long as your all tight, no fluid loss, brakes operating normally and not binding, you're all good!

Just make sure they're not TOO good
