exhaust
Morning, just received new gasket and clips for my exhaust, put the new gasket on ok but can't get the muffler over the lip of the exhaust, more than likely it was tightened too much when the gasket had worn away, i have opened the muffler up a bit but worried about doing damage, what can i do to get it over the lip?

Wiggle it...They are tight with a new gasket, use some copper slip as well...on all surfaces. Helps when you next take 'em off as well.
Oh & gently open up the muffler end, you wont have to do it much.

Re: exhaust
Thanks, its the muffler end i'm having problems with, what is a safe way to open it a bit more?
Re: exhaust
I would get a pipe or bar that just fits in & use it to gently prise open the end of the muffler, you might even be able to do it with a stout bit of timber, like a hammer shaft for example...take it easy & go a little at a time.scouse645 wrote:Thanks, its the muffler end i'm having problems with, what is a safe way to open it a bit more?

Re: exhaust
Will give it a go.
Re: exhaust
No good, it just stops dead at a certain point, which isn't far enough, there will be no gasket left at this rate.
Re: exhaust
Get a nut and bolt the same length as the width of the pipe, put the nut on the bolt and tap it in across the end of the pipe, now get a spanner and unscrew the nut so that it expands the opening. you may need two spanners.

Re: exhaust
Thanks mate, will give that a try.
Re: exhaust
Just a thought but check inside the muffler & make sure the remains of the old gasket aren't stuck in there, that might be what's stopping it going on...

Re: exhaust
I will have a look at that, not much luck at the moment, not even done one side, mind i have been in and out watching the footy, it just seems to come to a halt about 3/4 of an inch out

Re: exhaust
well i'll go to our house, i have got one side on
not the one i was working on, thought i would try the chain side, got that on by some careful use of a g clamp, thought that would make the other side easier, i thought wrong, is it usually that difficult?

Re: exhaust
No it isn't...scouse645 wrote:well i'll go to our house, i have got one side onnot the one i was working on, thought i would try the chain side, got that on by some careful use of a g clamp, thought that would make the other side easier, i thought wrong, is it usually that difficult?

I can only think that there is something stopping it going on. The right hand side is a straight pipe more or less, these are the standard cans right...?
Also you took them off ?
Again check down the end of the muffler/can, you are trying to get on & make sure there is no obstruction/ old gasket stuck in there...

Re: exhaust
You could try inserting the gasket inside the can end and slide the whole thing over the header pipe rather than have the gasket on the header pipe and then sliding over the top of it. Either way you will have to twist, wiggle and push it all together. Make sure you get the reaset exhaust mount the right side of the rearset. Sorry I cant remeber if it goes in front or behind, but I think it's behind.

Re: exhaust
Thanks, they are standard, the gasket on the chain side did end up on the can end, but the other side is well stuck now so don't want to mess with it, it does go behind on the rearsets, thanks for the help, i might try the other side tomorrow, as i'm knackered. or should that be i'm exhausted.
