Cams
Hello all, made a bobo, and yes I was kicking myself afterwards but i removed the rear cylinder cams and without thinking just put then down on a cloth without noting which came from where.
I cannot tell which cam needs to go where does anyone have any way of identifying the cams? thanks.

Re: Cams
Look on the cam shaft itself they are both marked individually. One will have IN for inlet and the other EX for exhaust or market Inlet and Exhaust. I can''t remember which but they are marked.
When putting them back in, make sure the slack on the chain is on the tensioner side.

Look on the casting of the shaft itself, I think it's around the midpoint along the shaft. How comes you had the cams out?

Re: Cams
I put a replacement engine in my VTR as the origional was on 70k and was quite rattley and had developed a more worrying rattle on the overrun/when stone cold. its always been rattley/smokey(probably using 500 mil to 400 miles) so i picked up what was advertised as a 28k miler for 340 + postage on ebay.
swapped my camchain tensioners out to the new engine as that came with automatic tensioners, but while changing the rear over I had a moment of madness and tried turning the engine over by hand without the tensioner in and heard the clack of the timing chain jumping teeth and immediatly though what the wombles am I doing theres no tensioner. so removed the cams to re-time it up, in my haste just put them both on the floor. (on a side note this also ended up with me setting the cam timing 180 degrees out and the engine would not rev past 7k/110mph. Fixing this was easy as shown by other forum members I just rotated the engine a revolution until the RT mark lined up and re-fitted the cams.)
on the plus side the engine sounds beautiful and is as smooth as butter, honestly the old one was so rattly it feels like i've gone from a twin to a four the difference in vibration. all in all a successful swap and the old engine will be getting some performance upgrades I think, bearings all over, try and find some cams, some forged pistons etc, i'm not in any rush now i've got the replacement lump in so it will just be a long term project.

Re: Cams
ive got a set of cams on my desk. on the shafts, at the back of the lobes there are two markings. one just beneath the sprocket and one a bit further down. it will have an "rr" (rear) or "fr" (front), then just beneath that it will have "in" (inlet) or "ex" (exhaust). If I knew how to upload pics I would have done it mate. but have a look, they are clearly marked, not even me can get them messed up! lol

Re: Cams
Well done Serlant you have been on quite a mission. The 180 degrees out is an experience isn't it
See it it all as lessons learned which will help with the rebuild on the other engine. You have some nice plans there.

Re: Cams
Most definatly, I was really angry with myself for turning it over with no cam chain tensioner I couldn't believe I was so stupid. its all fine now though.
whats peoples thoughts on changing the cams back over? should I was until the engine is cold? or will I get away with swapping the cams around while the engine is warm(riding it back from work). mainly worried about torqing the bolts back up while its warm will allow me to torque them up tighter than they if they were cold.

Re: Cams
Well the good news is the cams were in the right way, and only needed to take the cam cover off, and was able to find the mark on the exhaust cam
your guys help is much appreciated! I did 100 miles last night up to exeter bike night no problems.

Re: Cams
Strangely there are any, I neglected getting my phone out to take a single picture! instead I will supply rebuild antics?
new engine arrival

starting the strip down

frame removed and lump with swingarm attached

drag racer!

swingarm off and ready for lump swap

that'll do for the night. time for a cuppa

new engine on the box ready for parts to be put back on.

swingarm on

frame and rads on ready for carbs airbox etc then it was fired up (no exhausts not even downpipes! felt like someone was hitting the floor with a jackhammer!)

was exhausts on and done after that!
