Rear CCT leaking, and how I fixed it

Post by Flatline »

I have had a leaking rear manual cct for a while now and just couldn't face stripping the bike to get at it to use some sealant

So this is what I did

Undid the lock nut and screwed out the bolt 5 turns

Not full turns, use a flat edge as a start point and turn the bolt so you get to the 5th flat edge

Wrapped some plumbers thread seal tape (white ptft tape) round the thread( I used about 4-5inches of it)

Tightened the bolt back in the 5 turns it was undone

Tightened the lock nut and no more leak

Result!!

Liquid gasket does a good job as well

Good call Flatline, using PTFE tape never even occurred to me for that job, even though I have some here

Thanks, whilst liquid gasket is good, most of them I have seen need a dry surface, which can be a bit difficult if only undoing the thread a bit

Anyway, it's up to you guys which way to do the job :plainsmile

I think PTFE is a good idea. It's certainly what it's designed for, though I'm not so sure how it will withstand resistance to oil and high temperatures. Temp may be OK as it can go around hot water pipes with plumbing, not sure what the melting point for PTFE is. Saying that I use a bit of PTFE around my bleed nipples on brakes.

Nice one Chris. PTFE is perfect then. Withstands heat and chemicals.

It's certainly a less messy solution. :plainsmile

:) I call it Plumbers Tape for Everything :)

I've never seen it suffer from 90ish degrees heat while working, not sure how hot the cct would get though?
