leaking lock nut on cct

Post by grumpyfrog »

as subject says looked at the bike today after tramping down the road and got a leak on the rear manual cct. looks like I have stripped the rubber off. can I just wind the lock nut out, instant gasket and lock thread it back in place?
will it hold with oil still on the threads?

Male sure you set the rear cylinder to the compression stroke first otherwise you risk the chain jumping if you unwind the tensioner as is. If you careful you could just loosen the locknut, apply sealant around the base of the nut and tighten back up.

Flatty recently used some PTFE tape which is a good idea, but this would involve unwinding the tensioner.

If you just want to wrap it around the outside/visible part of the thread. Not sure that would stop any leaks unless it was wrapped around the bit that goes through the hole. If not loosening off the tensioner and only the locknut then use some sealant as it will squidge into all orifices. Tighten locknut back up, allow to dry....Done.
