Hi From Alberta Canada
Hi From Alberta Canada
My name is Jim , we are just outside Edmonton Alberta, My storm is a 98, Red with two Bros cans, also have 08 Zx10r
I found this site on Sunday after my VtR started the ticking from the top end when I was only doing about 25 kpm . Shut her down trailered her home. Both Honda dealers I have talked to in area have never worked on a VTR engine? I started her yesterday cold and the ticking is gone, sat at idle for about 5 minutes listened to both front and back heads and mechanical noise was about same in both with no ticking ,is that normal not to tick until engine is to operating temp?
Thanks

Greetings
As a precaution I would highly recommend replacing CCTs with manual CCTs > http://www.vtr1000.org/phpBB3/viewtopic ... 16&t=22720
Instructions for fitting are in the workshop knowledgebase > http://www.vtr1000.org/phpBB3/viewforum.php?f=31
Also if you have an unfinned R/R replace that pronto (search for MOSFET)
When were the valve clearances last checked?
If the noise returns use a screwdriver to your ear pressed against the engine area to roughly pinpoint where the clicking is originating.

HI there & welcome.
As stated above get those 2 jobs done asap. These bikes do tend to make lots of odd noises which, in most cases are perfectly normal, as long as you have done the CCT mod.

welcome to the forum buddy, have a good read thru the worksop section, i hope you get this issue sorted, i certainly wouldn't reccomend taking your bike to a workshop that doesn't know these engines/bikes.
HEY YOU GUYS!!!!!!
Re: Hi From Alberta Canada
Welcome aboard Jim
As already said, the CCT's and rectifier (un-finned version) are the two main weak points. Apart from that the bike is generally very reliable,
Chris.

Mainly need to take the cam covers off,not the whole head to check valve clearances and to replace CCTs. Also the tricky threaded caps in the alternator cover will need to come out so you can inspect engine timing.
