SP1 Fun and games

Post by Shauned71 »

Well as you all know I picked up a banger of a SP1 and have been mulling over what to do with it. At the moment I still don't have any long term plan but money isn't as tight as I first thought so at the least decided to hold on to the bike just for now rather than making any rush decisions. The one problem I do have is I find it hard walking past it constantly in my garage while sat in it's sorry state so couple days ago I started having a tinker around with it. Oil change, bypassed damaged rad, flush water, run through electrics etc. I had taken the damaged Art cans off and fitted the standard cans which came with the bike but they just sounded so wrong that I had a play today with the Art cans. Shortened the cans by about 3 inches which in turn meant removing the damaged areas and then had a trial refit. Have to re-rivet the ends and give them a good polish up.. Although they will still look a tad worse for wear hopefully they won't look to bad once finished. Also had a little luck, found a pair of front indicators and pair of grips knocking around so them along with my patched up exhaust... few bob saved :)

Heres a few more pics showing the damage etc... don't know how far I will go but if I do anything worth posting then I will add pics as I go.

No. It sounds terrible. I'll take it off you for £50 so you don't have to spend thousands getting it into good condition again, and waste all your time.

I see what you mean about the dent in the tank. I'm sure you could pull that out a bit and then just fibreglass it. You will loose a little capacity but it wouldn't be much.

So any ideas on Colours yet. Is this going to go Orange too.

Plastics look fixable - Some plastex and bumper filler and some rattle cans would tidy it up. http://www.vtr1000.org/phpBB3/viewtopic ... it=plastex
The most expensive part would be replacing the fairing decals with Honda originals.
It may be that your whole purpose in life is simply to serve as a warning to others.

Tank is a lot worse than the photo shows, most of the bikes damage is on the left side but somehow the tank has taken a big impact on right. I will try get a better pic, you will see what I mean then.

That's gonna be the hard part... fixing the bike up a bit without getting to attached. Not going to spend any money on her at the mo besides a few odd bits like lever, fluid pot etc I'm pretty sure I won't be breaking the bike now so will just see how money goes, I just don't want to put money into this properly until I know for sure if keeping or not. If push comes to shove and I need a quick sale I can still pass it on at a good price. Don't mind not taking time spent on it in to consideration, just doing bike in between other jobs so basically it gives me something to do.

Plastics are all easy repair, got a different way of doing them.. I go the old soldering iron route and then use a product called SMC by Upol.. This is how I fixed my storm up... had a 6 inch crack across mudguard, couple months after paint job she was hit from the front and knocked over. Point of impact was the mud guard but it held just fine :D

If I do get as far as painting then I will be doing it for me so it wont be red. Nothing wrong with the colours but most of them are that colour scheme. So to answer Carl's question.... Yep, if I paint it it will be orange again.. but.. I will break it up. Thinking about orange main colour and then the section of rear panel and the big wings on the side fairings which are black.. thinking of doing them in a dark metallic grey and will paint them on rather than use decals. Will then get a few customs decals made for the small wings on tank, honda, vtr racing and sp1. Wheels... not sure which way to go, first choices are either white or grey to match the grey I have in mind to use on bike. Last choice, black.

For now though I'm just planning on grabbing a few odd bits to put her in a usable state and then going to take her for a MOT. The rest I will make up as I go money allowing

You`ve done it now............you started it and then revved it up!

Don`t think the bike will be going anywhere other than on the road with you sat on it anytime soon.

Engine sounds sweet enough, other bits can get tidied up along the way. You`ve got those long winter nights to strip, clean and rebuild.

Just don`t outbid me on EVERYTHING on ebay...............
