43 tooth rear sprocket
Hi chaps,
Just for interrest sake, what is the difference in speedo reading when fitting a storm with a 43tooth rear sprocket, Leaving the front standard?

Re: 43 tooth rear sprocket
43 tooth is 2 extra. Therefore 2/41 roughly 5% over reading of speedo as this reads from front sprocket

Any help? http://www.gearingcommander.com/
Recently had a speedo healer fitted to mine after gearing changes, handy little thing it is

with a 43 tooth sprocket at 70mph its says 74mph and at 90mph it says 95mph so not too bad, well worth the mod i think, drive out of bends is far better. You may lose 8mph top end!!!
missing the noise, not the vibes. However never say never!
Re: 43 tooth rear sprocket
Personally the biggest drawback to the 43 tooth rear sprocket is how it takes weight off of the front wheel.bigtwinthing wrote:with a 43 tooth sprocket at 70mph its says 74mph and at 90mph it says 95mph so not too bad, well worth the mod i think, drive out of bends is far better. So while you might get a little extra perceived punch the chassis geometry changes will make the bike less stable and you will loose front end "feel"
Just remember every change is a trade off and there are negative aspects to a lot of changes (if not all) that are not thought about.
So while the lower gearing can work ok, I ran it for many years, the trade offs just were not worth it for me and I have gone back to stock gearing with very good results.
Loud pipes don't save lives, knowing how to ride your bike will save your life.

Re: 43 tooth rear sprocket
thanks all, much appreciated.
Probably good that it reads a little faster than what it is, im always a little over 70 anyhoo! lol, don't mind about the top speed though, never even considerred going that fast. I do like the idea of the bike being wheelie happy!

its a blast coming out of bends i can do great 2 foot wheelies for about 1/2 mile just off the thottle.ebenviljoen wrote:thanks all, much appreciated.

Re: 43 tooth rear sprocket
My mates is standard and off the lights i do have to hang over the tank a bit but it is noticably quicker and like you said i dont miss 10mph off the top end. best cheap mod for a bit of extra grunt in my book!ebenviljoen wrote:bigtwinthing wrote:its a blast coming out of bends i can do great 2 foot wheelies for about 1/2 mile just off the thottle.ebenviljoen wrote:thanks all, much appreciated.

Re: 43 tooth rear sprocket
as far as im aware changing gear ratio reduces rear tyre life by 10% as u get more grunt and u put more pressure on it
fun for a while but painful on the wallet (unless u win the lottery) u can pop wheelys on standard gearing too and the bike feels alive
if for whatever reason u decide to change ratio change go -1+2 to balance it a bit
but thats my opinion u dont have to listen

bloody hell i bet thats hard not to wheelie isnt it!, and regarding tyre life your probablty right, but i get through 2 rears and a front each year as a rule!

Re: 43 tooth rear sprocket
15/42 is my combination. which I find a good compromise.
NOT SO MEAN,NOT SO LEAN,EX-MAROON MACHINE!
Re: 43 tooth rear sprocket
I've been running -1+2 on all my previous bikes and it was all fine they didn't feel wheely happy unless I wanted them too

Re: 43 tooth rear sprocket
Leave gearing alone and tune engine for 10% more power, then it feels as lively but the speedo reads accurately.
I don';t follow my own advice, of course, mine is running a 15 tooth front and std rear.
Never a prob with chain life as I run a scotoiler

It's not falling off, it's an upgrade opportunity.
