Exhaust Repack and End Cap Removal

Post by VTRDark »

I thought as it's dry I shall make a start on re-packing my exhaust cans. Got the rivets out no probs and then managed to gently remove the metal strap from around the can. But for the life of me I can not get the end cap off/separated from the sleeve.

Any tips or advice for doing this?

I have given up for today now, got frustrated and was getting angry. Plus it's bloody cold out there and the old bones started seizing up.

I have put the bike back together now and I shall run it without the rivets and strap on the end. Maybe a bit of heat will help or the cap will come flying off the end as ride down the road at silly speeds. Oh I also put the baffles in, my ears can't take much more and I refuse to wear earplugs.

Loads of plus gas or whatever then get a hook or something inside & pull.

Also rubber mallet & tap round & round but not to hard to distort !

Bung a large spud in the end, without the rivets it should blow itself off :plainsmile

Risk assessment "Make sure nobody is behind the bike"

Make sure you have pushed the rivets through so you can see inside the can .
It's also easier to do it from the engine side as you have the length of the can to use as leverage .

Won't it depend on which end the baffle tube is attached to? Have you drilled out the rivets at both ends?

I've only ever seen the tube welded to the engine side .
But that don't matter as when the end is off it's easy to knock the other end out from inside :-)

Yes indeed, but it would make it a lot more difficult to move if it's attached at the top end.

Rivets are drilled right through, that was the easy bit. Knocking it out from the inside, now there's a thought, but I don't think I could get a lip to hit it on the inside as the inner perforated tube will be in the way. Mmm might take the rivets out on the inlet side as well. Going to have to get myself a can of plus gas too. It sounds like good stuff. The cap is most likely stuck on with some exhaust sealant/silicone which is holding it on so tomorrow I may get a blade out and try to break the seal.

Or I could go the super spud gun route.

The more fun method but definitely the last resort :D

Well I found an easy way to remove it. Put the baffles in so there is more backpressure and ride off down the road and the following happens after about 10mins.

So thought I would pull it out and have a closer look.

There's not much packing left. Only what you can see and little more towards the bottom of the sleeve. So basically I have been running around with no packing. Looks like I am going to have to remove the inlet side as the perforated tube is attached to the outlet. Job for the next couple of weeks I think as I'm going away tomorrow. I shall have to bodge it back on for now. A couple of rivets will do the job. I wont even put the strap on.
