*** IMPORTANT*** Swingarm and linkage bearings servicing***
Re: *** IMPORTANT*** Swingarm and linkage bearings servicing
And imho, hammerite is perfectly good enough as it can't be seen unless you've binned it.
But fit some grease nipples, and use them at least annually.
Which reminds me, must do mine again.
The needle roller bearing can't have a nipple fitted, as the grease can't get past the bearing housing.

It's not falling off, it's an upgrade opportunity.

Thanks Mr Duffy
Tony, you're right. Hammerite will be fine, I think I was getting carried away with sending stuff off to the powdercoaters.
I've been reading a bit on the grease nipple mod, decided I'm quite happy to pull the bolts out annually to inspect/grease.

Do your bearing need changing then or are you just doing them as you have it all apart. I polished the dogbone on mine and gave it a quick coat of lacquer. pretty pointless really but looks nice.

To be honest, the bearings look fine! But while it's all in bits and I'm replacing every other bearing might as well do the linkages too.
Here's bearing No.18 to go with the other pattern ones listed by Duffy..

Re: *** IMPORTANT*** Swingarm and linkage bearings servicing
I'm really struggling to get these bearings out! I've heated up the outer metal and managed to get the bearing faces level with the prolink surface.
How do I get it to come past the outer surface and eventually out??
Pics may help!

I have a vice but don't want to destroy the soft metal of the wishbone bit...
I've tried this but too fiddly!

And now I've lost the outer bearing case surfaces to tap
...

Why did I even attempt this!!!!!

Re: *** IMPORTANT*** Swingarm and linkage bearings servicing
well if you thought wickys swing arm shock bolt was bad i must win a prize for the worst. All the bolts came of fine one was only hand tight
Bolt that connects the linkage to the swing arm was completely seized after many heating and wd40 attempts we decided to cut the linkage from the swing arm which would allow us to merely tap the remaining ends of the bolts from the swing arm.
The threaded end of the bolt eventually came out but the cap end of the bolt would not be freed even with air impact wrench! We decided to drill the bolt in some attempt to weaken it and still it will not come out ! any ideas that will cost less than £30 as that is the going rate for a swing arm on e-bay ????

The shock link now looks out of shape, might need a replacement i think.

tw@ it with a hammer if it don budge use a bigger hammer and a real man to swing it

Re: *** IMPORTANT*** Swingarm and linkage bearings servicing
Heat. The aluminium casting will expand more than the steel cap head.
Then air wrench, unless you've rounded it out already.
Heating it on the hob gas ring will get it hot enough.

Re: *** IMPORTANT*** Swingarm and linkage bearings servicing
Is it worth putting in the grease nipples as the bearing that is going to predominately fail is the one that cannot have a nipple & is closest to the exhaust which means that bearing needs to be lubbed once per year
Re: *** IMPORTANT*** Swingarm and linkage bearings servicing
I dont think it is,I will inspect and lube when I do my anual strip and deep clean etc.... during winter.darkember wrote:Is it worth putting in the grease nipples as the bearing that is going to predominately fail is the one that cannot have a nipple & is closest to the exhaust which means that bearing needs to be lubbed once per year
