front cylinder chatter
front cylinder chatter
Got a storm here, Not my Bike, I've been asked me to have a look over it. On tickover there's a chattering noise coming from the front cylinder, when I rev it a bit I thought it disappeared but now think it's still there so it doesn't get louder with revs. It's not coming from the tensioner area. Any idea's ??

Re: front cylinder chatter
Shims, exhaust gasket leaking?
Do you know the history of it? could it have had a CCT problem in the past and tweeked a valve?
and before anyone else says it...What's it chattering about?

My new ride is a bit of a Howler and I love to make her Squeal
Re: front cylinder chatter
It's not the nicest one I've seen. Streetfightered, looks like ZX7 front end, Full akrapovic exhaust
which has seen better days. condition overall is below average, horrible purple paint, yellow wheels, A bit ratty over all but it kind of suits the style. Rode it and it pull really well, top and feels much fitter than a std bike so I don't think there's any valve problems. could be shims but they normally go tight not loose and it's not a tappet sound, More like a cam end float sound but didn't think these bike suffered that. The exhaust is blowing at the front head and along the left hand side of the sump at a join (the akra goes left side not right side as a standard system.

Re: front cylinder chatter
it could be the front CCT getting sticky and letting the chain run a bit loose at idle, or it could be he has done the stopper mod and the spacer is hitting resonance at idle and that is what you hear ratyling round.
take the CCT cover screw off and screw the CCT in [tighter] when it is running and see if the chatter goes away. or with engine off screw it out [carefully!] by no more than 1 turn. if you hit a hard limit before then it has stoppers

Re: front cylinder chatter
Ha sit got manuals fitted? If so, it could have been too tightly adjusted in the past, and may have damaged the head journal bearings that the cam runs in.
If standard ones, then the spring is getting tired.
I did one a week or so ago. The front one had failed, but the rear one was"sticky", and didn't retract immediately when revved. This meant that it tapped a little before settling down again, but as I had fitted a stopper mod, it can't fail and cause a problem.
It needs a replacement one, or a manual, but it's safe to run for now.

It's not falling off, it's an upgrade opportunity.

Akrapovic headers go on the rhspopkat wrote:It's not the nicest one I've seen. Streetfightered, looks like ZX7 front end, Full akrapovic exhaust(the akra goes left side not right side as a standard system.

Are you sure there akrapovic ?
And Are you sure they're fitted right and the springs have rubbers fitted as if the rubbers are missing they might give off a rattle
Re: front cylinder chatter
The cans are Akrapovic, the rest of the system has big bore pipes, It's not one I've seen before like this, it looks all akro and I've seen many of their systems over the years. I wonder if it's an ex race system going along the left side for ground clearance, might have once been on Toseland or Shakey's bikes ?.
This noise doesn't happen when cold, warming it up doesn't seem to set it off, it only seems to happen once it's been out for a ride. I think the owner is just going to live with it. I found out why the exhaust was blowing at the front, it had one bolt missing and the other loose, now that blowing noise has gone I can hear it blowing a bit on most of the joint

Re: front cylinder chatter
Very interesting system :-/ see what you mean it dose look like a akra maybe an early one or one made for a right handed track
Be nice to see how it performs on a Dyno ;-)

And thanks for upping the pics

Re: front cylinder chatter
bike looks like a dogs dinner
pipes look very strange, but as lloydie says it may have been a full on race mod to get more clearance for Clockwise tracks

Re: front cylinder chatter
The bike looks rotten, have you noticed the horns on the left side and the metal bar supporting the headlight
the filler hole for the scotoiler is plugged with a twig ffs. If Steptoe and sons made motorcycles
Mind you it goes like shite off a shovel, at least it feels it with no fairing.
