Spark Plug Replacement

Post by Virt »

Doing air filter and spark plugs this weekend, it says the following in the workshop manual;
Measure the spark plug gap between the center
and side electrodes with a wire-type feeler gauge

CAUTION:
To prevent damaging the platinum coating of the
center electrode, use a wire type feeler gauge to
check the spark plug gap.

Make sure that the 1.0 mm (0 .04 in) wire type feeler
gauge cannot be inserted into the gap.
If the gauge can be inserted into the gap, replace
the plug with a new one.
What is a wire-type feeler gauge? And is it absolutely necessary, is it not possible to measure it with something else or does it have to be one of them? :?

To be honest they are usually set right when you buy them from the Honda dealer.
Hope this helps

I personally don't attempt to gap iridium spark plugs, they should (famous last words eh) come pre-set anyway as Kev says,

Thanks, the links say NGK's don't really need to be gapped anyway. I shall go do that now before I forget

Thanks you two

Any good suggestions for plugs on these girls?
Online or eBay links?

You've got me thinking now, on purchasing my Storm, i really have no idea how old the plugs are.
Its started to have some hesitation on starting, especially when warm... Maybe its time to change plugs.

Got a spark plug spanner. Struggling to tighten them though, spark plugs don't feel like they're getting any tighter. :? :?

Saint, I'm sticking in a new honda genuine filter. Old one was filthy

No. Cause we've just taken it out and found the problem. It's a 5545, but it won't screw in because it doesn't have any thread at the top for the spark plug spanner to grip onto?

What kind of "spanner" are you using? :? You should be using the hexagonal part of the plug to tighten with, the thread/nipple is just to attach the plug cap (two different fittings)
