It went ting ting ting THUNK

Post by poss »

Or something spine chillingly simlar as my the front Tension on my VTR decided enough was enough, strangely though it hadn't made a noise (that i could tell) up untill the deadly thunk. It now lays partially in pieces while i pick up the courage to have the head off and see if i've b*ggered anything else.

Anybody else suffered a similar thing? Did it bend anything or where you lucky?

On one good note i can highly recommend E-Bike insurance on the basis that i phoned them to see if i had recovery and the bike was back in my garage within an hour of phoning them. Top blokes.

That's becoming chillingly common....you soon will see plenty of information from former victims here....
May I ask you if you do not mind - how many miles it did till this and which year model your Firestorm is?

Its a '99 FV (?) model and it's got 22odd thou showing, i dont know if the tensioners have been done before or not as i've not had the bike all that long. The front one i've removed has a red dot on it if that means anything to anyone.

Was told by a mate in the "trade" to make sure the tensioners were the latest ones with a pink dot.
In the end I bought mine from a dealer and part of the deal was that it was to have new tensioners fitted. They now have pink dots. It had less than 10K on the clock too.

What happens when the tensioner goes at high speed on a motorway for example? Is it a case of grabbing the clutch and gracefully making your way to the hard shoulder????

Glad to hear you were ok! But bugger about the bike.... the one downside to the storm!

You could be lucky Poss, mine went at about 70mph and all I needed to do was slap in a new tensioner. Best have it checked though, I just flew by the seat of my pants to be honest!

Well at present i'm waiting on my tensioners to arrive, i've had the cam covers off and rotated the engine slowly by the back wheel and nothing seems untoward, so as soon as the tensioners arrive i should be back in business.

Fingers crossed as i'm supposed to be doing a bike safe course on sunday and i don't fancy using my mates Harley over the firestorm. Still we'll wait and see.

did u check the valves? mine did exactly the same thing as yours, no nasty noise a shudden "bunk" and then carnage...basically because the cam chain is then screwed the piston hits upwards destroying stuff (in this case my valves)

Don't mind me butting in but...............white, pink, red or orange they are all the same no difference. At least thats what Superhawk site says.
Only real option is to fit manual ones or do regular changes. Any way if you think ccts are trouble I had a hell of a job fitting a Turbo charger, just couldn't get boost over 5
OH NO.........NOT AGAIN. sorry love, its never happened before

Turbo???? 8O christ i had enough trouble refitting the damn cams, incidently it seems that all i'd down was wedge the tension blade(?) tween the block and the chain hence the thunk, its nearly all back together (still got to refit the tank) and it turns over nicely.

Fingers crossed it'll all be ok.

Cheers for all the replies it makes me feel 'special'

Incidently and on a completly different track, if your in the market for a new lid and fancy a Shark pop into your local Hein Gericke ( or preferably the Maidstone branch  ) as Shark lids are reduced by 50%, also HG is running a comp to give away a Rossi rep R6 not everyones cup of tea but you could always Ebay it if you win it.

Can i just ask why the feckin' hell the vtr has two positions marked F on the bl**dy flywheel thingy, i spent ages last night looking for FT to no avail so i see F and presume (wrongly by the bag of spanners noise i have) that is my mark. Arrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrgh i just hope now i've not boogled anything and its time to take it all apart again.

Hey ho thats life ain't it. :x

Hello all
Just done the samething before I had to go offshore poss.
The barsteward thing only has 8400mls on it too.
Looks like I've stretched the cam chain as well as bent the inlet valves can't get the timing marks to line up on the cams now.( thanks del for the info)
I'll have to wait till I get back from abroad before I can try a new chain in it.
I was just starting to get the hang of wheelies on it too.
