Rear shock returns slooowly...

Post by Jamoi »

Evening bods! Just going over a few bits before I go for a blast...

I noticed the rear shock rebound is very slow (adjustable penske)

When I push the rear of the bike down with all my might, it returns (or rebounds) very slowly, 1.5 to 2 seconds from lowest point to fully returned sag position.

Would this indicate my shock has lost pressure? Or is this ok?

I'll see how it feels on a run, but I'm sure that the standard one used to just boing straight back up!

Your thoughts are much appreciated

1.5-2 seconds sounds a long time....try reducing your rebound damping mate.

Aha! Thanks mate, I had a twiddle and now its nice and quick but not boingy! If ya know what I mean

I'd like to set the front and rear up with someone who really knows their onions. I have the Roger handbook for setting the front up but no info for the rear.

It's funny how I was a bit reluctant to twiddle anything without a reassuring nod from a fellow forum member!

Cheers :)

Also...! The sag seems quite low at the moment, how do I stop it compressing down so far with just my body weight (please don't say "eat less pies"!) :D

In fact, anyone know if there is a guide for setting rear sag and rebound etc? Has Roger written one avaliable online?

Jamie, Static sag should be set without you sitting on it. it is the difference between the measurement with the weight lifter off the back wheel [just pull it towards you when it is on the side stand and lift the back wheel up], and the measurement when the bike is resting under its own weight. I think it should be 8mm, but I would have to get off my lazy butt and go look in the garage to confirm.

I tape a 1m steel rule to the rear wheel spindle and cover the tail fairing with some gaffer tape so the rule can't scratch it and then I make a kind of strap out of folded up tank tape [with no sticky bits exposed] to hold the rule against the tail unit. then I draw on the rule were it passes the guide tape, with a felt pen the setting position with the wheel off the ground, then count the little mm markers from there to the position when the bike is sat back on its wheels, then keep adjusting the preload till it is 8mm from the first marking.

Make sure when you set it up you go for a ride first, get everything warmed up and moving freely. Also you'll want to set it while your wearing your riding gear, no point in going to all the trouble of doing this in jeans and t shirt.

Ok will go for a blast first :D

It's getting frosty now so I'll have to wait till the morning as I'm soft in my summer leathers!

Am I right in thinking, to reduce sag I need to compress the spring by winding the big threaded adjusting ring down?

You need a helper to help with setting up your suspension properly, and yes compress the spring but is the spring made for your weight.

Here's some useful links with some interesting reading.

I particularly like the troubleshooting on this one.

And on the forum
http://vtr1000.org/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=10176

you will notice yet another fork question and Stormin' Pearls of Wisdom from Ben will lead you to a 404 page not found in the URL it points to the old address. Just cut out the

and replace with

in your browser address bar.
Note to Admin: Can these links be edited in the original thread please.
