I'd have thought popping the cct out? Or turn the engine over with the sparkplugs removed and listen for really horrible noises!

Id say checking the tension of the tensioner with the screw driver is a good idea. Or undo the bolts on head cover and just lift the head to see if the chain is slack. Or you could turn it over slowly by hand using crank bolt and see if there is any obvious contact although if its only jumper a bit there may be none. When I checked mine it locked up due to the amount of bend in the valves.

Using a small screwdriver to check for any tension from the CCT spring will be fine, and your easiest option, just don't go turning it loads of turns. Turning the screwdriver clockwise will back the tension off. I would try doing that half of one full turn and see if you can detect any tension. By the way you've described it does sound like a CCT has failed, and that's usually the front one.

Note:- if you check the rear CCT you will get a small amount of oil come out of that one once you remove the end bolt. Take care not to lose the sealing washer too.
