Yamaha fzs600 1998 r/r replacement for storm?

Post by Acidicall »

Hello all, new to the site! Tho I have owned the storm for a couple of years, looks like the r/r has gone, battery was not holding a charge so bought I new one. The bike is used only at weekends and it spends it's life on a charger. It's the 98 so has no alarm etc. took it out for a few runs and had no problems, but on my last run I stopped lots of times and turned the engine off, had lights on etc. And found that the battery only had enough juice to turn it over once, lucky the bike was warm and so it started. Anyway it seems the battery is not being charged from the bike anymore and I don't really know since when but I'm guessing from before I put the new battery on. I haven't done any checks yet as I have been busy breaking a Yamaha fzs600 that I was using to commute but after one too many icy roads, and constant offs I have laid it to rest. So I have the rectifier from that and was wondering if I can use this, one because I have it and two to save some money!! Sorry this has turned into a essay. If it's just swapping the plugs over I'm more then capable to do that but if the r/r is the wrong spec then, oh well.

Thanks guys/girls

The best Yamaha R/Rs are MOSFET ones marked FH - they need some jiggery pokery to fit but they are a more reliable long-term replacement than SH marked ones.

Though anything is better than the original unfinned version.

I agree with Wicky, best is the MOSFET, but I can't see any reason why you can't use your old Fazer rectifier if you are trying to make use of what you already have. Looking at both the R1 and Fazer rectifiers on ebay, it seems they are the same set-up connector-wise as the Firestorm's.

NOTE:-
Just make sure you you fit the live wire to the correct terminal, as the Yamaha units have the live terminal on the opposite side , although you can check that from the wiring harness on the Fazer before removal.

This bit here is what you want to be taking note of

My Fazer is on almost 50k miles and electrics are rock solid, I would use that reg rec with no worries!

Question for the knowledgeable, I need a reg rec for my storm, are the only yamaha mosfet regs the ones with one grey plug and one black plug, or are any of the mosfet ones the ones with a single plug? ebay is a minefield, and putting R1 into wemoto just brings up a raft of single plug ones, whatever year you choose.
Budget storm gradually on the road to spangliness.

Generally no...but you can't really tell what the R/R is from the plug so don't rely on that. You need to check the part number, if it starts with an FH then it's a MOSFET and if it starts with an SH then it's the standard SHINDENGEN type.

There a list of compatible R/R's in the following:

I did look at the plug on the storm and the fazer rectifier and looks like it should be a straight swap, i will look at the +ve -ve wires tho to make sure they match up, i didnt look at that!!!
