After sitting a week or two my Storm was refusing to start due to a dead battery. I bought a new Lucas and also fully charged up the old one.
The Lucas when fitted was really poor, didn't start the bike and when turning it over I noticed a little puff of smoke. This was as you sit on the bike almost directly under my right ar*e cheek. Once the old battery was fully charged, stuck it back on and it fired no problem.
Again tonight after another couple of days quite cold weather, same thing as per before.
Any ideas?

Re: Starting/Battery Issue
That will be the regulator rectifier then. Don't ride the bike with a good battery. If the R/R is overcharging you will kill the battery and could end up having to replace both if your not careful.start the bike and when turning it over I noticed a little puff of smoke. This was as you sit on the bike almost directly under my right ar*e cheek

So the R/R would affect starting capabilities if goosed?
Re: Starting/Battery Issue

Re: Starting/Battery Issue
It only happens when the new battery is connected though?
Re: Starting/Battery Issue
Are you sure you have the Neg and Pos the right way around.
I would still check the R/R and all the connections. That's the only way to know for sure if it's working. If it's still the standard un-finned type then these are especially prone to failure.

Re: Starting/Battery Issue
I did initially wonder if I had them connected up correctly, but I did. What is the most cost effective replacement available out there?

Charging System Diagnostics - Rectifier/Regulator Upgrade > http://www.triumphrat.net/speed-triple- ... grade.htmlCommon Technical Issues: HONDA VTR1000F
These Honda models all have a permanent magnet battery charging system, consisting of a stator with three output wires, which feed into a regulator/rectifier. This unit rectifies the AC into DC and regulates this DC to 14.5V to ensure proper battery charging. The output from the regulator/rectifier connects to the battery through a main fuse. Common faults in this system: 1) Regulator/rectifier failure. The OEM regulator/rectifier is a commonly failing part. 2) Stator failure. The stator fails regularly. Causes are age, heat and vibration. Test and replace when it tests bad. 3) Bad connections in the system. Check all connections between stator and regulator/rectifier, and between regulator/rectifier and battery. Make sure all connections are clean and good. (are these charred/melted due to excessive heating?) These bikes are fairly old now and will need serious attention given to the connections.
