Not VTR related.....

Post by VTRPiG »

...but maybe someone may have some helpfull info

just tried to get the wife's bike ( Yamaha R6 ) out so I could use it for work tomorrow, and when I tried to start it it turns over but makes a whining sound as it cranks. It doesn't seem to be quite catch and starting, sorry for my poor mechanical explanation but as some of you are aware I am somewhat of a newbie at all this

I have been keeping both bikes alternating on the trickle charger and only just unplugged the R6 from the charger last friday. It seems to have ample battery power but no spark, I did start it last week as almost had to use it then with no worries. :confused :confused :confused

DAMIT!!!! Its the one vehicle that has been super reliable since we got it! :eh:  :wtf:

I would start with the starter motor. Sounds like the starter motor pinion gear is either not engaging or stuck. It may be a case of removing it and re-greasing and hopefully not something more serious. Put the bike into gear and roll it forwards a bit then try starting the bike. Hopefully moving while in gear will dislodge/nudge the starter pinion and allow it to spin.

My husband broke my bike!!! THIS is what happens when you allow someone to abuse your wheels when their own is off the road...sigh...I've learned my lesson the hard way.

Good advise Carl, I've heard kick starting those R6's is a real pain!

I also think pop it in gear and give it a rock back and forth will sort it, then in to neutral and fire it up

So the missus called break down and they promptly came around, was a little surprised as it was a home call out. I know they respond super quick if it is a woman broken down by her self but hey ho!

Any ways, it turns out that when I started it last week I didn't let it warm up long enough before switching off so there was still fuel in the cylinders. So when I tried to start it tonight it pretty much just completely flooded it.....oops!! 8O :eek2

He connected one of them battery buster pack jobies to the battery and got me to try start it with the throttle wide open, this apparently help the cylinders draw in more air and clear out the fuel. Didn't take to long and she coughed to life with a couple of splatters and as my hand had the throttle wide open...the rev needle very quickly hit 15 thousand!! a Don't think that one went down to well with neighbours as it was 9pm :eek2 :p

Thanks again for your advice and quick responses.
