Juddering issue (SP1)

Post by slower110 »

Evening all, I'm posting this up on here (as well as SP forum) to see if any of you guys have had the same problem and hopefully benefit from the knowledge you lot have. Spoke with Cheekykev earlier and I'm going round his next week to see if we can sort it but if anyone has any suggestions then much appreciated.

Ok, I'll try and keep it to the point.
When front brakes applied the bike starts to judder. Higher the speed, harder the braking, the more severe.
When coming to a stop slowly, like at traffic lights through town it's still apparent but feels more like a rocking horse if you will! Like the forks compressing and rebounding quickly.
Starts happening once the bike/brakes are warm, not noticeable at the start of a ride.

What I've done -
Fitted new oem brake pads.
Cleaned calipers/pistons. I didn't strip them, pumped the pistons out and cleaned all over with toothbrush and brake cleaner. On removal, on each caliper 2 of the pistons didn't pump out with the other two. Blocked the other two off and they pumped out fine.
Built up, roadtested for 25 miles all ok. Todays ride, about 30 miles in the problem re occurred :( . Spoilt the day, just had no confidence at all.

The bike is a 2001, SP1. 11,300 miles. Stood for 4 years before I bought it last July but I bought it with 7,800 miles on so done a bit.
As I was saying to Kev, I'm a bit surprised to be having an issue like this so soon. Any suggestions or experience is appreciated gents :) .

Warped disks?
It may be that your whole purpose in life is simply to serve as a warning to others.

Have you got aftermarket levers fitted or do you use a disc lock ?
When was the last time the calipers were serviced ?
Chances are the pistons are stuck and are putting force on the discs making them over heat and warping the discs

Also check the disc bobbins all spin freely and are not sticking.

+1 on the the disc bobbins. My 954 discs suffered from this and gave disc judder when the brakes were applied. Get a nut and bolt the size of the bobbin holes, hand tighten them, use brake cleaner on the bobbin and spin them using a socket & ratchet. Go round the disc one by one. Just use a piece of tape on the first one you do so you don't end up repeating yourself.
Good luck.

I immediately thought warped discs. But at 11,000 miles?
Would the calipers be in need of a service after this many miles? (Genuine question). Ok I know it's been stood but I've put over 3000 trouble free miles on it since.
Appreciate the suggestions fellas, thank you.

Take the calipers completely apart and give everything a good clean.....

There is still some curd in there...that is why they worked for a bit and then went to shite again.....
