Tyre question

Hi guys an gals.

Right. I have junk tyres on my storm, and got a budget available to do various jobs on it. One thing I want to do is get new tyres.

My fazer had PR1's on when I had it, and they were really good, then I replaced them with PR3's, which were awesome in the wet, truly great. I am a bit of a michelin fan, but would try something else, I like Bridgestones as well.

Main question is this. PR3's are brilliant, and about £220 for a set. I can get PR1's which are older tech for £140, so getting on for £100 cheaper. I never had a dodgy moment on my PR1's so I am wondering if PR3's are overkill for the way I ride, and should I save myself £80?

Does anyone have experience of both on a storm, or can recommend something else which is good value, but I don't want junk, not putting conti go's or maxxis etc on, needs to be a good tyre.

As far as I know PR1 arent even made any more so they're likely to be a few years old if you can get them.
Personally I have PR3's on my Storm and Bandit and neither bike has had a moment with them.
The Storm isnt powerful enough to stretch the traction limits of most good/average tyres to be honest.
Angels or Sportmax would be your other options but I'm sticking with Michelins.

PP3's. PLENTY of grip. AWESOME millage. still on my first set (after switching from Q3's) and ive prolly got about 4,000 miles on them. still look new and not even near time for a change. great grip when your at speed and high lean angle.

never tried the PR series though so if its millage your after then those are more of a touring tire. i expect to get maybe 7 or 8,000 miles out of my PP3's compared to 2,500 to 3,000 out of my Q3's.

Iam happy with Dunlop Sportmax Qualifier 2,s. great grip in the dry and lasting pretty well, 5000 miles last year and still a bit left on the rear

I have Pirelli rosso diablos on my VTR and tbh they are the dogs danglies having
terrific performance wet and dry... and safe for sure ... but they are coming out
at over £200 for the pair fitted ....

Tyres are an individual personal item and folks prefer thier manufacturer that
they feel best with etc and look around ....I have noticed lately a few motorcycles with
these on and TBH they look real awesome ... Continentals and a good price..

I second the dry grip! They seem unflappable when warmed up.

But on the downside, the last few weeks has seen my rear tyre breaking loose on a number of occasions under acceleration slighty leant over and I didn't get more than 2500 miles out of the last rear

I'm going to try a slightly harder and more durable set next I think, as I'll be doing a few long trips this year.

Lots of people are impressed and rave about the all round ability of the pr2/3, so I might try them.

It's a bit hard to advise on tyres, they are a very personal thing, plus you haven't really told us what you do with the bike i.e. commute, track days, Sundays out on summer days etc., but anyway for what it's worth this is my opinion.
Dunlop Sortsmart for me every time I also have them on my SP2, give them a try, you won’t be disappointed
I have Dunlop Qualifiers on my Blade and I'm more than happy with them, I would have Sportsmart on but because it has a 130 - 16" front wheel they're not available for the Blade, trust me the Dunlop Sportsmart are excellent for normal road use and beyond

Given that the set of PR3s I put on the fazer were on 9k when I sold it, the first still looked new and the rear was a bit flatted off due to motorway commute but was still legal and had most tread apart from the flat, I think I might pay the extra and go for PR3s again.

Bit of an update. Been ringing round my local places for prices, PR3's are running £260-280 a set round here, ( I will want them fitting as wheels will be freshly powdercoated. I have fitted my own tyres with levers but not risking it).

My mate is a massive Bridgestone fan, and he is telling me I should try BT016's.

Given that I am not commuting or doing high mileage, and these are meant to be stickier (more race oriented than touring) and these are about £180 a set think I might give them a go.

Anyone tried them? My bestie swears by them, he runs them on two blades and reckons they are the best without going track compound (which he also uses but got 1000 miles from his last set). he says he gets about 6k miles on the blade including a week at the nurburgring on his last set.

Just regarding the PR3's still... you can source the tyres yourself on ebay, have them delivered direct to the garage and just go to them for fitting.
If you take them the wheels loose then fitting shouldn't be much. Should work out around £220 total?

PR3s are running about 215-220 on ebay cheapest. got to be minimum of 10 per wheel, so looking at 240 cheapest, still 50 more than BT016 fitted. If I was still doing motorway miles, there would be no question PR3's, but I don't need to do that mileage anymore.

Yeah fair enough, given your change in priorities it makes sense to give 'em a shot and have a few tankfuls in hand to see what they're like.

I fit PR3's for £270 a pair (ride in ride out) and that's cheaper than others where I am, very good tyre though. Try also looking at Avon Storm Ultra 2, they've just bought out an Ultra 3 so the 2's are going a bit cheaper, they're a good Sport touring tyre, same market as PR3's. Also PR2's are still available and cheaper, another very good tyre, head and shoulders above the PR1 which really wasn't a good tyre at all.

I think I have realised that my useage has changed a lot. Last year I was riding to work on the motorway every day, this year I am riding purely for fun and hoping to do some track days, so I think I am heading more towards a sport tyre than a touring tyre. I still rate PR3s as the best tyre I have ridden, but if I can get the same stickyness for less money I am gonna try the 016s out. Mileage is no issue any more. BT016 also have excellent reviews for wet riding and warming up fast.
