engine seems a little noisy following oil change??

Maybe it's just me but the engine now seems slightly noisier following an oil change the other day, it seems to be making a sort of whirring noise at tick over.
The only other thing I’ve changed is the exhaust cans, I swapped the loud Micron race pipes for lightly de-baffled OE cans so it’s possible I simply hadn’t noticed it before over the din the race pipes make. The Microns will be refitted once I’ve repacked them I suppose then I’ll see if the noise is still noticeable, in the mean time anyone any thoughts on what could be causing this whirring type sound?

Also the tick over seems a bit high at 1400 rpm, I need to check this and adjust if necessary.

I would have thought the change in can's (with the ones you're now using being quieter) is why you're hearing something you didn't before. The same for the change in tick-over speed, due to the can swap a back pressure change.

If you're really worried put the old can's back on and see if you hear that noise then, and see if the tick over speed changes.

got one of the race cans is bits now so I'll have to wait till they are back together, my main worry is CCTs, my bike must be one of the very few out there still running OE tensioners, I know all about the potential issues with stock CCts but when I bought my bike it had just had a main dealer service and they'd replaced both tensioners that's nearly 5K ago and it's only had one oil change in that time, so I was kinda thinking the CCT s been new would be fine at least for the immediate future. But I guess it's always in the back of the mind that they are stock despite them been relatively new, are there any symptoms, early warning signs, noises associated with imminent failure?

I personally wouldn't be risking the standard CCT's as they can fail at anytime, I would seriously consider doing the Stopper Mod.
However when a CCT spring is getting weak (that's the part that breaks causing a CCT to fail if you didn't already know) you will notice a slapping noise as the cam chain is slapping about in the cam chain tunnel. That is due to the CCT not taking up all of the slack in the cam chain as it does normally. This sound is heard as the rev's drop to approx. 3,000rpm and as they go lower when changing down, as in slowing down for a junction or roundabout etc.

this is more of a whirring than a slapping although I guess it's not a big leap sonically speaking whirring or slapping, but I take your point about the CCT s, I'm not happy with the manual CCT option, but the stopper mod seems to have no downsides so I'll look into it and hopefully sort it this weekend, that at least eases the worry of CCT failure wrecking the motor.

I agree with Chris that the change in cans is introducing new noises you may not have heard before. I think your over thinking the CCT thing but as said Stopper is a good move. It will also take those CCT worries away

Is the whirring noise coming from the engine, could be airbox induction noise Other whirring noises could be wheel bearings, pads binding/worn, discs warped or not floating and bobbins needing needing freeing up. Could even be just the sound of the engine spinning over and the quieter exhausts allowing to you to hear them. I wouldn't worry too much and if there are any problems the sound will gradually get worse in which case makes it easier to pinpoint.

obvious ones here ....1. Is there enough oil in the motor ..? 2. Is the oil the correct spec/ make

10w40 Motul semi synth bang ontop line of oil viewing window, brakes stripped cleaned & bleed as part of service, I'll check the air filter / air box make sure it's all sealed and the top is on square but I can't see it been possible to get it on qrong, so I'm thinking it's probably as mentioned nothing to worry about unless it gets worse.
I do need to look at dealing with the CCt s though don't like ther idea of the manual ones as they are fixed with no spring in them, I think the stopper mod is preferable as it retains some movement in the tensioner, anyone point me to a link detailing how to do it?

If it makes you feel any better, I run the stock CCTs. Yes I have replaced them when needed but I am at 96-97K miles on my bike with no issues.

So there is someone else with stock CCT s , mine were replaced at last main dealer service 5K ago so are probably still OK but it is a worry given the bad press they receive which is supported by the amount that have failed. They appear to be the one major flaw in an otherwise generally robust engine, so it’s not as if I haven’t been warned. So I'd feel pretty dumb if I ignored the warnings and then had one fail, so I guess I will have to do something about sooner rather than later.

Funny you should reply to this thread Mike, as I was thinking about you running your VTR with standard CCT's, plus the incredible mileage you've covered with them as well, when I was replying to this topic,

Hawk you must be blessed or just very lucky. They are a ticking time bomb that may never go off. Having them seen too will give you piece of mind that they will never have the chance to self destruct. Your call Budd but to me its a no brainer.
