hey all. a question about the breather pipe.
my question is the thin breather pipe next to the overflow pipe on the rear of the 97-01 tanks should have a non return valve in it to prevent fuel spills when the tank is reasonably full and bike is leant over.?
i checked both my storms and neither have a non return valve on but both trickle fuel out.
checked lings and it seems something should be there rather than just a hose

Re: fuel tank breather pipe
Sounds like you're overfilling the tank and the overflow pipe is doing its job.
It may be that your whole purpose in life is simply to serve as a warning to others.

Re: fuel tank breather pipe
no im not filling it too much its the breather dripping fuel not the overflow.
Re: fuel tank breather pipe
Neither have a valve of any sort on it... The breather is positioned such that if you overfill the bike, which BTW filling it to the brim, while sitting upright qualifies as, it will leak small amounts, especially now, when sunlight makes things warm up, and the petrol expand...vtrjames wrote:no im not filling it too much its the breather dripping fuel not the overflow.
Re: fuel tank breather pipe
the breather pipe is a seperate pipe to the overflow pipe. it wont drip fuel if the fuel cap is closed as the overflow hole is sealed from the tank. the breather is the smaller tube next to it on the bottom of the tank. thats the one i get fuel from when bike is leant over to the right.
if you take the hose off the tank and tilt the bike petrol will run from that connection.
i have 2 vtrs and both do the same so i highly doubt i have the same fault with both tanks,

Re: fuel tank breather pipe
That will be my fault. I did mention in a recent post that the breather has a valve in the line. I have double checked and it is in fact just an enlarger/reducer depending on how one looks at it. Not really sure why it's there unless it's for increased flowNeither have a valve of any sort on it...

As for the leak it's generally down to overfilling but this usually causes a vacuum lock.

Other explanations could be a faulty fuel cap or maybe a hole in the metal pipe inside the tank causing fuel to get in.

Re: fuel tank breather pipe
ah ha thats the doofer thing i was looking for, thats just a enlarger thing.? wow its £12 for that thing.
at that money i thought it was a valve of some kind.
cheers for the pic

Re: fuel tank breather pipe
I think that it's to stop people mistaking the small diameter section pipe (if it hadn't had the enlarger and bigger pipe fitted) with the vac line.
It's not falling off, it's an upgrade opportunity.
Re: fuel tank breather pipe
Check the gasket on the filler cap, if it's deteriorated, it lets air in when it shouldn't which makes fuel flow at inopportune moments...vtrjames wrote:the breather pipe is a seperate pipe to the overflow pipe. it wont drip fuel if the fuel cap is closed as the overflow hole is sealed from the tank. the breather is the smaller tube next to it on the bottom of the tank. thats the one i get fuel from when bike is leant over to the right.
