Breather filters
Breather filters
Hi
I went to change my air filter today and found the foam filters for the breathers were in bits. My nearest dealer is a 75 mile round trip and i doubt they keep them anyway and David Silver Spares dont have stock so they will be 5 to 7 days too.
This maybe a silly question but has anyone made a set from an old sponge or similar?
Thanks
Scott

Re: Breather filters
If you just buy some air filter foam from your local mx or trials shop; get the 20mm thick stuff, you get loads for a tenner.
I bought some years ago, still got some left and I've made loads for people.
The thicker stuff works well because you only have to chop the shape out once, then cut it in half with scissors- Bingo!
You have the two filters you need.
Piss easy, and if you scrap a couple on the way it's cost you a few pennies, so what.
Oil it if your'e fussed, tbh the air flow speed through these is so low I don't usually bother. It's just a mechanical filter stopping crud getting to the sealed side of the carb slide, above the diaphragm.
And having pulled loads of those apart, you never see a dirty one...

It's not falling off, it's an upgrade opportunity.

Re: Breather filters
what's likely to happen if you don't bother with the sponge and put it back together without any?
I've now gone all European and bought a KTM Superduke GT and Aprilia RSV1000R ,

Re: Breather filters
result will be the risk of lumps of contamination of dead flies getting into the oil

Breather filters
Wouldn't go into the oil .
But large particles could stop the slides from opening or even damaging the diaphragms
Then it wouldn't run right

Re: Breather filters
arrh, you are right lloydie, I was thinking of the wrong pipes into the airbox. there ones go to the carbs like you say

Re: Breather filters
cheers for the replies, mine were wrecked when I changed the filter last week so I figured the bits of sponge floating about would do more harm than good so I throw them out, I've just orderd some filter foam so when that arrives I'll cut some to fit I wouldn't want dead flies in my carbs

Re: Breather filters
I checked mine about 2 months ago and they were all falling apart. Luckily I live about 50 miles from BikeBandit.com's distribution center so I usually receive products in the mail the next day of I order them before 12pm. So I got a whole new main filter while i was at it. The little ones were like $1.00

Re: Breather filters
$1 is about the price they should be. Id happily pay £3 or so for them but what honda charge is taking the piss a bit.
