Firestorm 98 debaffle problems ?

Post by vtwinthunder »

Hi guys ive had my firestorm for 3 weeks now and im a vtwin convert for life :) My bike is totally standard , i dont have money for flash exhausts , so was wondering about the debaffling solution . Will this be too loud for mot pass in the future ? Will i have to do anything to the fuelling of the bike to make it run properly ? I just want the v twin noise that goes with that awesome torque :) Thanks in advance .

welcome to the club.

look up "bafflectomy" or similar and there are lots of threads on how to do it. the result is a nice noise that is not too offensive, but lets the beast be heard. Fueling will be OK if that is the only change you make

The actual de-baffling is pretty straight forward, simply drill around the inner pipe and then waggle, shake, twist, yank, generally abuse the inner pipe till it breaks the inner welds and comes out.

It definitely improves the rather straggled stock sound and gives a louder deeper tone, whether it will pass the MOT is a moot point and I think largely would depend on the tester, mine passed last year with full race Microns although I'm pretty sure it would fail at any other test centre, get a friendly tester you should be fine, get Mr jobs worth and you may not.

As for it effecting the performance I don’t think it will actually cause problems, I swap mine about depending on my mood, loud Microns or quieter de-baffled OE cans and I’ve found no major difference in how it runs, the only thing I have noticed is it doesn’t like any choke when starting and the tickover changes depending on which pipes are fitted. All this suggests that different pipes do have an effect but in the real world out on the road any difference is indiscernible.

I agree that it generally won't cause a fail on MOT day but if the tested wanted I'm pretty sure he could issue a fail baased on inappropraite modifcation or perceved damage to the inner exhaust, but I agree it's extremely unlikely

Mine is stock motor with debaffed cans. Runs sweet, sounds lovely, and I asked mr mot man about it and he just laughed. Tickover is quiet, when you blip it it's loud.

YUASA is the only battery I would recommend, can't remember the nbr though, just look it up, I think it might be YTX12BS.

Yesterday, when I was trying to start it with the fuel tap off (shame) I got over four minutes cold cranking!

Faster cranking, lasts longer, yellow, beginning to see a pattern here?
