Rear suspension settings.

Post by mattycoops43 »

Hi folks.

Right. Rear suspension is bouncing me off the seat over bumps.

Just rebuilt the back of the bike, all linkages cleaned and re greased so there is no problems with anything being seized. The spring preload is a couple of notches off max height.

I don't really know what the rebound screw does, I have never touched it and don't know what it should be set at. I am 19 stone so am surprised it is acting this way, but it feels rock hard.

Can someone give me a base setting to start from with the rebound?

Set the preload on 3-4 notch .
Back the rebound out (count the turns)
Sit your ass on the seat and bounce on it .
You want it to return fast but under control so turn the rebound in half a turn until it's under control .
Test it after every half turn .

I take it were talking about a standard rear shock here. You have too much rebound by the sounds of it. It's coming back up too fast!! Just have a play with the rebound screw in 1/2 - 1/4 turn increments until it feels better. I think you may pleasantly surprised. IIRC turn it clockwise for less rebound.

Standard shock yes.

its hard to tell but it feels more like its just too damn hard, than its the spring pushing me up after a bump. Feels like the shock just doesn't move at all over a bump if that makes sense. I'll have a play though, thanks.

Yep sounds like you need to turn out the rebound a bit

As a starting point to give you an idea here's Performance bikes mag recommended settings. How they came to this conclusion I don't know because everyone is a different weight.

Performance Bikes settings Rear Preload - Position 2 Rebound - ¼ of a turn out from full in Front Preload - 2nd groove showing Rebound - ¼ of a turn out from full in

I still think you just need to have a play with the rebound screw. Unless the shocked is knackered.
than its the spring pushing me up after a bump
Which is why there is a rebound screw to control how the spring pops back up.
