Possible gearbox problem please help!

Post by Danr »

HI all,
My new to me firestorm hesitates in 6th gear when I am on consistant/cruising throttle it is fine as soon as I crack it open it stutters and feels as if its running out of fuel . All other gears are smooth with no problems.
Spoke to an ex Honda mechanic and he said he has never heard of a 6th gear problem on any bike and suggested it was a fuelling problem????
Supposedly it has a stage one Dyno jet kit fitted. Unsure what air filter?
Fuel 'E' marked cans fitted.
Any ideas?
Thanks in advance.

Hello and welcome .

Sounds like you need to pull the carbs and see what's in there jets and needles and air filter too
And where are you ?

What RPM are you cruising at? Wondering if the bike has taller gearing than stock so your cruising below optimum rpm in 6th gear. Then when you gas it she sputters.

If it's a fueling issue wouldn't that happen in any gear at the same RPM? For example if your cruising at say 3K and from 3 to 4K rpm she sputters, wouldn't it sputter from 3 to 4K rpm in every gear?

Not necessarily as the engine is working harder in 6th to accelerate at the same revs. There is a lot less torque required to accelerate in 1st, hence the sky high wheely.

I've read similar reports when people gear up their bikes to improve millage, although the bike is geared very well in 16-41 for cruising in 6th. Struts along nicely around 4K at 65mph. So if ur at around 3K, u can still cruise but when u gas it the bike will bog because your to low for any real power. I'd check ur sprocket sizes and see if they are stock. Won't hurt and that way u can narrow down the issue

Firstly thanks for the replies.
As for RPM didnt really check that, just keeped an eye on the speedo.
I will check the gearing tonight and post the findings I will also try and take her out either tonight and check what RPMs are.
From about 90mph (on a closed road of course) it started to mess about.
Having done a quick search on here I noticed its a mixed view on the stage one Dynojet. Is it easy to remove and put back to standard??
Thanks very much.

It's not so much that there are mixed views, but it does take some tweaking to get things right as with any jet kit, especially if you have an aftermarket filter, and one can end up chasing their tail getting things to run as you want. A couple of washers under the original needles may be all that is needed. You have only just got the bike so I think you just need to get used to it, get to know the bike. You may be lugging it a bit by being in too high a gear.

It's good that your researching the carbs and the bike may indeed be in need of a tune up, a bit of tweaking here and there. Keep an eye on things and see how it goes. Maybe one day, if the problem persists then investigate further, strip the carbs down and give them a good clean out, see what set up they have in there and either put back to standard, shim needles or install a jet kit, balance carbs etc. It could be something as simple as a bit of crap in the carbs/jets that needs cleaning out. A good blast down the road can sometimes clean this out if the bike has been sitting and not been used in a while. Or there may be other issues going on.
